America has a de-facto caste system around a meritocratic aristocracy composed of well-mannered bankers, lawyers, doctors, and other MBAs with vague job titles, all determined by your ability to do algebra and answer a few questions about 3 paragraphs of text when you're 16.

the other crazy thing about my family is that my 90 year old boomer grandpa is insanely loaded while all his kids are ~broke in their 50s/60s. everyone is really tight lipped about it but sometimes my dad will let slip how much money he's sitting on and im like what the fuck

At a recent dinner I met a very senior engineer at one of the Big Four tech cos. His team develops tooling for a 0-engineer future. They're not allowed to tell anyone internally what they're working on to avoid mass panic. He figures mega layoffs start in 18 months.

go to GRAD SCHOOL. You will SURELY NOT REGRET getting a PHD. it will make you feel COOL and MYSTERIOUS when you tell the guy at the gym that you do ALGEBRAIC GEOMETRY. It will only cost you NINE HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLARS in missed earnings.

Spiritually I feel like I should be in grad school rn. But If I go to grad school I'm just getting this job again after... At 24 I'm simply too full of whimsy and general joie de vivre to be writing "microservices". I should be doing some obscure math that is never applied.
