Here's my months-long investigation into Enbridge's influence in Ontario for @thenarwhalca & @TheLocal_TO. It shows Enbridge is fighting the inevitable shift away from fossil fuels by doubling down on natural gas at the local level.
Just to put this win into context: Arshad Nadeem didn't even have enough money to buy a new javelin. He didn't have proper coaching or a training facility. His village banded together to raise money to send him to the Olympics.
Arshad’s win is cinematic.
"He was raised in a racist city that pretends it isn't"
Incredible statement from the Jeff Bennett, who ran for Ontario Progressive Conservative party in London in 2014, on the London terrorist attack.
Hi @AndrewScheer,
I'm a reporter w/@NatObserver.
You recently spoke at a rally w/Faith Goldy, a known white supremacist who has bashed Muslims many times. Do you regret doing that in light of the #Christchurch mosque attack? How do you plan to tackle white supremacy+Islamaphobia?
Freedom has come under attack in New Zealand as peaceful worshippers are targeted in a despicable act of evil. All people must be able to practice their faith freely and without fear. 1/2
“We need Canadians to know that Osama is a Canadian name, that Mohammed is a Canadian name, and that worshipping in a mosque is a Canadian tradition." - Alexa McDonough post-9/11
I wish I was in Canada when she said this (learned 10 years later at UofT). We're in her debt ♥️
We live in such weird times because a protest (that is still) trying to oust Justin Trudeau has ended up removing Erin O'Toole, the only federal leader to meet them?
I'm flabbergasted.
I can't sleep.
Here's a message I got from someone else who can't sleep.
"My wife wears the hijab. We go for walk daily, but today I was afraid. I tried to avoid it but we still went ... whenever I heard a car I looked back and held my wife's hand."
How am I meant to sleep?
HUGE NEWS: 7 youth who took the Ford gov't to court — arguing axing cap+trade violated Charter rights — have won their appeal. Judges said Ontario's failure to reduce emissions was "contributing to an increase in the risk of death & in the risks disproportionately faced by" youth
This is not what I imagined my first @guardian byline would be but here it is - and I wrote it with shaking hands and a heavy heart.
I have nothing profound to say; I am completely broken.
Here's the thing.
People ARE staying at home. So many are on the verge of emotional breakdowns from the apparent futility of staying at home. Cases are still rising. Nothing is being done to identify why. No new measures are coming.
At what point do governments figure this out?
Good(ish) morning to everyone except the guy (he's been blocked/reported) who felt the need to message me at 3 am to say what happened in London was 'collective karma for Muslim terrorists like you."
It's Tuesday.
We're in Canada.
There's a lot of work to do.
