I once had to give a talk at a surgery soceity meeting for someone who had an emergency. They gave me a slide deck and asked “can you present?” It was honestly my favorite presentation ever. Had no clue what was gonna happen with each push of the button. Exhilarating.

My 12 year old has started saying “it’s anesthesia’s fault” whenever anything bad happens around the house and my work here is officially done. She graduates from the program.

One of my favorite things to do after an emergency case is to call the radiology team who made the diagnosis and give them thanks (and feedback) about our operative findings. Have yet to encounter anyone who is less than excited to have this chat.

“PEER”: why does this patient need a CT scan? Me: they have a hernia that contains 85% of their visceral content, and extends down to their knees. This is a preoperative CT scan request. “P”: I don’t understand….why you need a scan to plan a hernia surgery? M: 🤔

Immigration agent: do you have anything to prove you are a surgeon. Me: I can describe the steps on an inguinal hernia repair, I can show you gross photos on my phone, and I can give you a business card. IA: the card is enough. Thanks.

Lessons learned from my first morning of telehealth: 1) Zoom too complex, FaceTime super easy for older patients 2) Patients unconcerned about video-related HIPPA violations 3) Patients conformable showing off hernias and wounds 4) Patients concerned about their doctors' health

Is there anything more disheartening as a surgeon than to do a very difficult adhesiolysis that consumed HOURS OF YOUR LIFE only to dictate a one line statement “we then lysed adhesions for the next 4 hours using a combination of blunt, sharp and judicious electrocautery”?
