'on absence' was constructed from the words flagged in Thokozani Mbwana’s ‘An absence of’ by Affinity Publisher’s internal US English dictionary as unrecognized, improper, and/or unsound ,‘on absence’ is a portrait of a person that language rejects
The cover of engendered autumn 2025 on a background of dark grey.

On the cover is a heavily textured painting by Jude FireSong consisting of layers of colour, first daubed or smeared, and then speckled. Dominant are red, orange, yellow, light blue, and medium blue though purple, green, and pink also make an appearance.

Beside and below the cover is the following text:
20 writers, poets, & artists
“as I move through the world, people project images of bodies and faces they assign onto me that evoke in themselves desire, lust, joy, disgust, emotions I have no say over. Perceptions against my will. And those images stain my skin and reek. I'm forced every day to carry those stains”

“How strange for a person to look at something as nondescript as me and decide I’m “her.” ... My brand of dysphoria is the distorted reality of it all. It is being a shapeshifter with no original form...” - Thokozani Mbwana, An absence of engenderedlitmag.com/autumn2025
“...I feel that the human body as it exists in the world right now does not exist at all to and for me. I seldom register my own existence through my physical appearance because most times when I look in the mirror the body is that of a mannequin and my face is one that has no features at all. And not in a devastating way. In a way that matter-of-factly states that that is what this body is to me. An unmarked vessel. My face, a blank canvas.

To ascribe something like gender to a mannequin without a face, one I live in every day does not make sense to me. How strange for a person to look at something as nondescript as me and decide I’m “her.” Sorry, I’m just some (agender) guy, and barely even that. My brand of dysphoria is the distorted reality of it all. It is being a shapeshifter with no original form...”
