39 years ago tonight, 12/19/85, I went to bed about 9 pm. An hour later than normal. I was 9. Dad wasn't home yet. Which was weird. Because it always took about 25-30 mins to drive home from San Marcos to Fallbrook after he called mom to say he was on his way.

You never know when you will see them last, or how it all will end.

My dad played Football at Fallbrook, where he graduated in 1971. He was an Offensive Linemen, number 62. His son was an OL, but his grandson, Nate, was the best OL of the family! Wish they could have met! Hug your family and friends a little tighter tomorrow.

Needless to say, that was the worst day of my life. I loved my dad. He was a good dad. He was a beer truck driver, a tow truck driver on the weekends to make some extra money. A hard working man. He taught me to love the Padres, and hate the Dodgers!

I fell asleep, and had a dream that I was teaching my younger bro to play baseball. As if God was comforting me.

I went back to bed. And lay awake. Then began to stress out. I was the oldest of 3 children. Who would teach my younger bro and sis how to play baseball like dad did? Who would teach them how to change a bike tire? How to mow the lawn, like he taught me?

She said "Hi Chris, go back to bed sweetie." I asked what was going on. I then saw some of the family members down the hallway. They were crying. I'll never forget that horrific night. I was old enough, even at 9, to put 2 and 2 together.

One of my 3 uncles (my dad was the oldest of 5 kids) came in too, and my grandma. Then my mom proceeded to tell us, in between crying and trying to compose herself, that we would never see my dad again. He was in a car accident on the 15 freeway just south of Welk Resort.

At about 1 or 2 am, I was stirring in sleep, and heard a bunch of people in our tiny Fallbrook house. I recognized a few voices; grandma was there, some uncles, and aunt. I opened the door to see what was going on, one of my aunts was right there waiting for the bathroom.

I woke up at about 7 or so, and dressed myself for school, as always. Then headed out of the room, then saw even more people at our house. My grandma came down the hallway, and gave me a huge hug. She was crying.

When we went to a grocery store, no matter where it was, he would turn all of the Coors beer cans towards the customer, and would have me help. It's a little attention to detail like that he had, as a person who loved his company, and wanted them to succeed.

Not long after that, my mom came out from the kitchen. She told me that I wasn't going to school today. And told me to go into her room. I knew what had happened. I didn't have to ask. I sat on my mom and dad's bed. She brought in my 7 year old brother, and 4 year old sister.

He died. A CHP officer found a card in his wallet directing him to his best friend and coworker. CHP officer called our friend Don. He and the officer came to tell my mom shortly after midnight.
