We recently obtained the highest-resolution 3D images of the human brain ever taken from outside the skull. This is the first look.

4 years ago we reoriented our entire lives around a question: how do you make telepathy real?
Yesterday we shared the most detailed scan of the living human brain.
Here is the story of how we got here (1/n)
Can ultrasound make you smell things that aren’t there?
Turns out, yes! We reliably triggered distinct scents like a campfire burn or a garbage truck by targeting our brains with ultrasound. To our knowledge, this has never been done before, even in animals.
This may be a
A challenge I never thought I'd have:
Most of our renders of the brain were too beautiful to be used, and would make people think it was fake

Throwback to when I got an improvised last-minute fade haircut for better signal quality
Sometimes that's just what you have to do to see inside your brain!

Donald ❤️
This is one of the nicest things anyone has said about us. And the pictures are so tender — seeing our team through your eyes
@donaldjewkes is the most cracked filmmaker out there and the secret sixth member of @alephneuro
hard to put into words how special this team is
the feeling of yearning for this technology is so palpable
and if you ask nicely they might just scan your brain
Me too!
We actually shared our images with an endovascular neurosurgeon at UCSF and he was in disbelief.
After we got over that, he told me how exciting this would be for all the different applications in stroke localization and vascular assessment.
It’s been a big week (month? year? decade?) for ultrasound and I’m getting dozens of DMs so I’m going to do another one of these “the science behind” threads.
On this weeks’ edition: Aleph’s incredible images and the ultrasound science behind them. 🧵🔊

We're flattered by the disbelief!
It's indeed the human brain—mine. Here's us doing the recording for the first time, showing power doppler on the screen in real time
Held off on sharing it so far since it's so unpolished 😂
All this was done with a small team of 5. We’re hiring.
The work is hard, but this future is so curious, so incisively at the center of what it means to be human, that it would be heartbreaking to look away.

Today we’re sharing the most detailed scan ever taken of a living human brain.
None of us were ultrasound scientists before this. We worked backwards from a desire for brain interfaces and taught ourselves physics, ultrasound, electromagnetism.
This is a story four years in the
