Why Immigration Policy Is Hard: And How to Make It Better, Immigration policy will never satisfy everyone. It’s a stubborn fact that more people will want to move to high-income countries than residents will want to admit. But, as Alan Manning – former head of Britain’s Migration Advisory Committee – makes clear, that doesn’t mean we can’t do much better. We should start, Manning says, by ditching...

Shocked by the rise in the minimum income requirement to over £38k. Unlike work/student visas no well-organised lobby or department to oppose so an easy path for the govt to follow. But likely to be real consequences for many families

This is a really important question. I think its a deep-seated ideological bias, so deep it is probably not recognized as such.

Genuine question: why does the governor of the Bank of England encourage restraint in wage demands but not call for restraint in businesses’ attempts to protect their profit margins? Intellectual bias, ideology, greater resignation wrt price- than wage-setting, or something else?

My latest paper on monopsony with @Monica_Langella. V proud we managed to reference Homer Simpson, Alfred Marshall and Karl Marx in one paper. All bases covered I think

Intensity of opposition of some to min wage in us always amazes me. but it was not always so calm in uk. Don’t forget we had no min wage at all 93-99 so we have been on a journey. Hopefully us can follow uk path from there to here

A year & half ago, I was in London, working with the UK govt on the question of min wage setting there. Nostalgia of pre-covid life aside, that experience looms large today. Hope we can take a more rational, evidence-based, approach to min wage setting in this country...like UK.

    Replying to @arindube and @rortybomb
But I couldn't aspire to do it without @alanmanning4 's Monopsony in Motion. After all, I keep MiM on my nightstand for good reason.

Many thanks to @sarahoconnor_ for thinking me worthy of this. Really not sure about sketch of me in a tie. Will I ever be taken seriously again?

My latest blog in which I vent at the low quality of arguments for immigration in serious newspapers. Please up your game! Or don't be surprised if your arguments fail to prevail.

#SewellReport on Race and Ethnic Disparities gave impression pay differentials between minorities and whites are falling. They are not; if anything they are rising. see this for men

My take on migration and international students. A good example of how we struggle to have sensible discussions about immigration. Both sides have little interest in evidence except when it supports their view.
