The politics we have as Americans ultimately is up to us. We can choose for our democracy to be a dreary march to the drab center or running over groups of people with a metaphorical bus. Or we can choose an imagination battle that realigns the center ...

Someday, when the next generation asks us what we did in this moment to protect our freedoms, will we be able to say: everything we could? Voting ends November 8th. #ProtectOurFreedoms. #VoteDemocrats.

The whole premise is wrong here. Yes, there are structural problems with our democracy that go back to the founding. (hello, wildly disproportionate US Senate) But trust in our system didn't just decay. It was attacked, deliberately, and for a pretty simple reason. By one side.

Good morning. We're not linking to it, but the Washington Post this morning is running a story about the mysterious forces that have broken our political system. No one wants to hear this, and it's inconvenient for billionaire newspaper conglomerate owners, but:

Obscenely wealthy right wing donors have spent on the order of $1B/year for DECADES attacking government. The motive is simple: this has been a foolproof and bulletproof solution for keeping taxes low on the rich. Sounds like a lot of money, but the ROI on it has been incredible:

The ugly truth is that one party is having serious discussions about solving those problems, and one party has become a very weird cult around a former reality TV show host that's sole remaining rationale for existence is protecting the interests of the very rich.

Understandably, Americans don't want to believe that, and neither do major newspaper editorial boards. But the latter have a responsibility to the former to tell the damn truth, and they're not doing their jobs.

Thanks goodness President Biden has finally put a stop to this. And: Dem administrations CRUSH Republican ones on the economy! Republicans believe it does better when the rich have more money, Democrats believe it does better when ordinary people do.

    - 7 times as many Biden jobs as last 3 R Presidents - Lowest unemployment rate since '69, lowest poverty/uninsured rates ever - Of 49m jobs created since '89, 47m have come under Ds There is only one party of growth/opportunity in US - the Democrats.🧵👇 x.com/SimonWDC/statu…

In the form of tax cuts. Thanks to the good folks at @4TaxFairness for this list: Reagan: Kemp–Roth Tax Cut (1981) Clinton: Taxpayer Relief Act (1997) Bush Tax Cuts (2001) Bush Tax Cuts (2003) Bush: Working Families Tax Relief Act (2004) (continued... sigh)

And yes - two too many Dem administrations are on that list. But extreme conservatives are the perps. They persuaded a lot of Dem voters. And two Presidents. It's madness. With this level of extreme inequality, shoveling more tax cuts to the rich is a wildly extreme choice.

Part of how the right has kept this scam going is by becoming virtuosos of division and fear: attacks on LGBTQ, people using welfare, immigrants, Dems. And none of them do this as well as Trump. Blaming abstractions like collisions of old and new obfuscates this reality.
