The Justice Select Committee’s report on the IPP inquiry has been published today. It recommends resentencing everyone serving IPP. This is the best result we could have hoped for, but we NEED everyone to take action now. A thread below & report here:

We hope @ShabanaMahmood & @JamesTCobbler will act swiftly & implement the IPP amendments that were passed in the Victims & Prisoners Act before the election was called. Swift action on these changes will reinstate hope for many people affected by IPP sentences & may save lives.

Thank you @DrAliceJEdwards for acknowledging the IPP as a miscarriage of justice and highlighting the damage it has and continues to cause.

“They infringe on fundamental human rights.” Imprisonment for public protection (IPP) sentences were abolished in 2012, but there are nearly 3,000 prisoners still being held. UN Special Rapporteur on Torture, Dr Alice Jill Edwards, is demanding action.

Day 7 of a new government. We remember the 2,796 people who are still in prison serving the abolished IPP sentence & the 90 who’ve died in prison through suicide due to the damage the sentence causes. @ShabanaMahmood @JamesTCobbler

1/2 We are honoured & also speechless to have been put forward for the Longford Trust award & to have won it. This is not just an award for UNGRIPP but for every person who has been affected by the IPP sentence. For those who have survived it & for those who have not.

Day 15 of a new government There were nine self-inflicted deaths of people serving IPP in 2023.  This is the highest number of self-inflicted deaths in a single year since IPP was introduced. @ShabanaMahmood @JamesTCobbler #ippreform

Yesterday the government released data on self inflicted deaths in prison. In 2023, 9 people took their own life whilst serving an IPP sentence. Each was a real person with real loved ones now suffering. This is not justice. @AlexChalkChelt

Day 17 of a new government There are 1,180 people serving an IPP sentence who have never been released. 99% have served more than the tariff that a judge set. 705 of them have served more than 10 years longer than the tariff. @ShabanaMahmood @JamesTCobbler #ippreform
