It seems ironic an institution that (yes, that traditionally values discipline and conformity) puts a premium on unit cohesion, brotherhood and a “leave no man behind” attitude simultaneously is instructed to pretend to ignore a fallen comrade in *that* situation. Weird.

In a dynamic society (like ours) the last reason anyone should seek political office (authority!) at any level is “to make a difference”. While the first reason should be to protect the mechanisms in place so others (scientists, artists, entrepreneurs, etc) can.

A resource is only so once we create the knowledge that it is. Eg: uranium. Before nuclear physics was discovered in the 20th century pitchblende was a useless rock. Now it's an ore. Resources are unlimited *because* we can always learn of more and how to do more with less.

"some guy" - well, yes literally true. But he was an archeologist so had much more relevant background knowledge than "some guy"/random person aimlessly browsing google maps 😉 This is why "serendipity" in science is often over-egged: bretthall.org/serendipity-in… Great story though!
