    A long overdue flight school update: after 22 months, 100+ flight hours, countless takeoffs and landings, and a whole lot of studying, I passed my checkride on the first try. I am officially a private pilot. The skyโ€™s really the limit now!

    Lesson 44: First solo cross-country flight! Flew from KRHV -> KKIC (King City) -> KLSN (Los Banos) -> KRHV. Nearly 3 hours in the air and 200 miles traveled. Spent hours planning it. Definitely the most exhilarating flight so far - and the views didnโ€™t disappoint!

    California cities are beyond broken. A developer proposed a high-rise on a vacant lot in San Jose. Though it isn't located in a residential neighbourhood, locals are furious. But most egregiously, the city only plans to hold meetings on this project in 2026 - 2 years from now!!!

    BREAKING NEWS: After years of deliberation, Santa Clara has decided to eliminate most zoning restrictions across the city, save for the historic downtown district. Updated building codes and 60-day permitting also reported. Intention is to grow the city to a million people.

    Can someone explain the logic behind rust belt towns opposing new development? Like, shouldnโ€™t they strongly support every single new apartment complex, office tower, or factory? Otherwise their tax base will continue to shrink and jobs & people will continue to move elsewhere.

    Much of San Francisco was completely rebuilt - buildings and infrastructure - just 5 to 6 years after the 1906 earthquake and fire completely devastated vast swaths of the city. In 2024, the planning process for a single large apartment complex or water main can take as long.

    Today I signed a City Council resolution opposing SB79 unless it is amended to exempt cities with a state-approved and compliant Housing Element. While I support the intent to accelerate housing development statewide, as written, this bill risks unintended consequences for LA.

    Cambridge finally did it. Iโ€™ve been hoping for 6 stories citywide with no strings attached ever since I got interested in urban planning. This should be a template for the nation - 6 stories, unlimited FAR & density, no setbacks. The housing crisis would be over in a jiffy.

    ๐ŸšจAfter eliminating parking requirements last year, Cambridge, Massachusetts has passed one of the more ambitious rezoning efforts in America tonight allowing 6-stories citywide by an 8-1 vote. Prior to this update, the City estimated only 350 new units would be built by 2040.

    New NIMBY tactic: critisize new apartments for "bad architecture" but remain silent when it comes to strip malls, cookie cutter homes, and the other unremarkable architecture that makes up most American cities. Why is only multifamily housing held to such a high standard?

    Marin County makes no sense. It's a sprawling car-dependent suburb filled with old, large, energy-inefficient homes built on forests or wetlands. Yet, its politicians claim to be "environmentalists" and oppose new apartments to "protect the environment" ...

    Can someone explain why massive high rise developments are pencilling in Miami but not the Bay Area? Florida Live Local developments require 40% BMR housing, & Miami rents are way lower than CA. Imagine if we built dozens of these strip malls across the Bay Area.

    In just a few months, Texas almost unanimously passed a bill to legalize single staircase buildings. Meanwhile, California merely passed a bill to STUDY single staircase buildings (AB 835), after facing massive BIPARTISAN opposition. Do better, California.

    Not a single apartment complex broke ground in San Jose in 2024. Then the city began cutting impact fees & "inclusionary zoning" requirements on a per-project basis. Literally weeks after this happened to a project near the light rail, construction began. It's not rocket science!
