At one point early in the revolution, the regime had soldiers fast-rope from a helicopter onto the roof of this mosque during Friday prayers. They then opened fire on worshippers. Look at it today.

I suppose it would be rude not to post at least one picture from the obligatory, I-had-tea-in-liberated-Damascus, trip.

Don’t look away, this is the reality of life in Syria after more than a decade of war. As people say we shouldn’t sanction the criminal regime in Damascus, or that “Syria is safe,” for the return of refugees, show them this. حسبي الله ونعم الوكيل

This is such an emotive case, which always provokes strong reactions. There’s two separate issues to consider: (i) what does being British actually mean in terms of having & holding citizenship; & (ii) what you think should happen to Begum in terms of facing justice.

This story has blown my mind. “Yazidi woman kidnapped by IS freed from Gaza after decade in captivity.”

This kind of bluster is borne, in part, from the emboldening of Putin (and Assad) in Syria where the chemical weapons taboo unravelled. The west’s failure to enforce its ‘red lines’ on this accelerated the rot. Now, not for the first time, Putin is talking about his nukes again.

Now Putin is really excited, and is now threatening nuclear retaliation. “It’s not a bluff,” he says.

The U.S. @StateDept appears to have granted a visa to Ali Makhlouf, the son of Bashar al-#Assad's cousin -- he was spotted recently in LA, driving a $300,000 Ferrari. State was asked about the issue & first ignored requests, then refused to comment. freebeacon.com/biden-administ…

Impossible to see how Assad recovers from here. His regime has collapsed everywhere, with astonishing pace, and zero resistance. He’s losing territory everywhere, in the north, south, and east. It feels like it’s just a matter of time before this comes to an end.

That applies to the children of immigrants, all Jews, and anyone from Northern Ireland. For these classes of people, their Britishness is contingent on an assessment of continued good behaviour.

Meanwhile, for those who can’t claim any alternative heritage (and hence different citizenship), their British citizenship exists into perpetuity. However you cut it, that’s a two-tiered system of citizenship which is inherently discriminatory.
