    Dora Akunyili, who died today in 2014, had lost her sister, who was given fake insulin for diabetes. This was 1988. In 2001, Akunyili became the head of Nigeria’s drug regulator, NAFDAC. By 2006, she had reduced the circulation of fake drugs in Nigeria from 80% to 17% [est.].

    When her husband burnt one of her early manuscripts, Buchi Emecheta—born today in 1944, 22 and raising 5 children in London—took her kids and left. In 1974, she published her first novel, Second Class Citizen. By 1983, she was one of Granta’s Best Young British Novelists.

    Today in 1984, Nigerian potter, Ladi Kwali died at the age of 59. Kwali had an almost mathematical sensibility and a mastery of form and the clay material, evidenced by the symmetry of her work. Ladi Kwali is featured on the 20 Naira note.
