With the now-confirmed tornado in Buffalo this afternoon, New York has officially broken its record for the most confirmed tornadoes in one year, at 26 tornadoes.
Forecasts have favored a steady increase in the total snowfall expectations for areas near the Buffalo Bills stadium. At this time the heaviest snow is expected Saturday afternoon into Sunday, with snow shifting south before the game. Travel may be hazardous, so be weather aware!
Two tornadoes touched down in Western NY yesterday (9/9/24), bringing the state total up to 31 for the year so far. This easily outpaces every other year on record!
As of Monday, we hired our full complement of five operational meteorologists. We'll be introducing them shortly!
Needless to say, they've arrived right in time to assist with today's storms. We're proudly supporting state government and helping staff the EOC as needed.
Weโre taking a whole of government approach to keep New Yorkers safe by:
โข Deploying emergency personnel and utility workers
โข Coordinating with county governments
โข Opening our Emergency Operations Center to actively monitor weather conditions
Smoke from the Orange County wildfire is drifting up into the Capital Region, lowering the air quality along the Hudson Valley. Rain this evening will help "clean" the air. Smoke will likely dissipate after 8pm.
We were proud to contribute this tornado summary graphic as background to @SenSchumer's press conference yesterday at ETEC, discussing this month's tornadoes as well as the National Mesonet Program.
There have been more tornadoes this month (23) than any other month in NY. #nywx
Upstate NY saw a record 20+ tornadoes this month. Weโre working to help communities recover.
And as we fight extreme weather and climate change, we also need the best technology to track it.
Iโm pushing to increase funding for @UAlbany's mesonet network to keep NY prepared.
Below is a radar animation from noon to 4PM today, with the @BuffaloBills stadium circled in orange.
Note how stationary this intense lake effect band was during this time. If the game were played today, it would have been dangerous for attendees and a treacherous commute.
One of our responsibilities is crafting detailed "spot forecasts" for important situations.
The @BuffaloBills playoff game on Sunday is an example. While the forecast isn't set in stone, we consider both weather & non-weather factors. Continue to check your local @NWS forecast.

Cloud cover is blanketing the entire East Coast as baroclinic-associated moisture combines with Hurricane Helene's moisture. Heavy rainfall is expected for much of the Southeast. Aside from localized ponding and a few rumbles of thunder, impacts to New York State will be minimal.
With this tornado confirmed by @NWSBinghamton, NY has now had a remarkable 25 tornadoes so far this year. This puts us in a tie with 1992 for most tornadoes in a *year* since 1950. Any tornado between now and the end of the year will produce the most tornadoes on record in NY.
NWS Meteorologists confirmed an EF-1 in Lincklaen/Otselic NY of Chenango County from severe storms that occurred on Monday, July 15th, 2024. For further information, please read the Public Information Statement: mesonet.agron.iastate.edu/wx/afos/p.php?โฆ
Hello New York! Welcome to the State Weather Risk Communication Center, or SWRCC for short. We're thrilled to be here at @ualbany.
While we have much to share (soon), we'd like to acknowledge the support of @GovKathyHochul and thank the @TODAYshow for helping us launch.
New York has launched a first-of-its-kind high-tech center to help track extreme weather and quickly respond to New Yorkersโ needs on the ground.
I had the privilege of showing Americaโs weatherman, @alroker, the incredible work being done at @ualbany to keep New Yorkers safe!
๐จ We're excited to post our first set of job announcements! These are for four total positions in operational meteorology. All positions come with excellent state benefits.
