Say cheese! 📸 Today, NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory caught the Sun "smiling." Seen in ultraviolet light, these dark patches on the Sun are known as coronal holes and are regions where fast solar wind gushes out into space.
Satellite imagery from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory shows the Sun in ultraviolet light colorized in light brown. Dark patches on the Sun's surface are in the shape of a smile.

Today, people in parts of the Northern Hemisphere saw a partial or annular solar eclipse! 🌙 Here are a few of our photos from the East Coast. flickr.com/photos/nasahqp… #SolarEclipse Did you see the eclipse? Show us your photos!
The Sun is about half-covered by the Moon as it rises above a lighthouse and water
A partial solar eclipse is seen as the Sun rises behind the Delaware Breakwater Lighthouse
A partial solar eclipse is seen duing sunrise behind the US Capitol

The Sun emitted a strong solar flare on Jan. 9, 2023, peaking at 1:50pm ET. NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory captured imagery of the event, which was classified as X1.9. go.nasa.gov/3IBxH8e
A red, gold, yellow, white, and black Sun on a black background. On the left, there is a white and yellow "X" coming off of the Sun. That is the solar flare. To the right of the X is a splotch of white and yellow. The rest of the Sun is a mix of black and red.

Wow @NASAMoon – after all this time, you finally put a ring on it! 🥰
The annular eclipse. Against a black background, there is a thin ring of light orange (the Sun) around a black circle (the Moon). There is the NASA insignia in the top right corner, a countdown clock on the top left showing 1 min 13 seconds, and Live Albuquerque, NM on the bottom left.
