Frankly bizarre comments from Andrew Bailey that after the longest wage squeeze for 200 years and on the eve of a recession workers shouldn’t ask for pay rises. Pay can rise without prices rising if companies rein in their profits.

We’re committed to strengthening workers’ rights. Thanks to government action we have boosted the minimum wage for millions, and given individuals and businesses more choice to find and create work that suits their personal circumstances. More info: gov.uk/government/new…

Ministers have invited unions for talks on pay in 2023. But these disputes are about pay in 2022. Promises about jam tomorrow won’t help our public sector workers pay the bills today. The Prime Minister needs to sit down with unions to agree an approach to help workers now.

Biggest rises in zero hours contracts among retail and social care workers- pretty awful sign of how we treat those on the front line of the crisis

The number of people on zero-hours contracts has risen by 156,000 people compared to the same period last year. That's a 17% rise. The biggest rises have come in wholesale and retail (41%) and health and social work (35%).

The government has been promising an employment bill to protect and enhance workers’ rights. Now- after everything we’ve seen at P&O - they’ve ditched it. Beyond a joke.

Here's the IMF making it clear that to bring inflation down it's profit margins, not wages, that need to fall.

Rising corporate profits were the largest contributor to Europe’s inflation over the past two years as companies increased prices by more than the spiking costs of imported energy. bit.ly/441jfya

Or companies could raise productivity- though obviously woeful record here. Or look at top pay - there were record bonuses in the city this year.

Governor’s argument seems to be ‘unions don’t cover everyone so some will lose out’. Great if he’s advocating for sectoral bargaining so more are covered… or we have minimum wage policy, and social security to help unwaged

Useful new Resolution Foundation report confirms that employers use zero hours contracts to cut costs and avoid obligations to their workers- long past time for legislation to end this approach.

    1) Union campaigning makes a difference! 2) Gig work is compatible with basic rights! 3) Next step - recognise a union!
