    35 years ago today, a Soviet nuclear warning system alerted officer Stanislav Petrov to an incoming American attack. He realized it was a false alarm, and did not pass the bogus warning on. His reticence may well have saved the world. Happy Petrov day! efctv.org/2NBJxUg

    40 years ago today, Stanislav Petrov helped avert nuclear war. In 1983, Petrov worked at the command center for a Soviet nuclear early-warning system that reported the US had launched five nuclear missiles. He could have alerted his supervisors—likely leading to a counterattack.
