I agree with all of @dilanesper's advice. But the longer I've been following and writing about the legal profession, the more convinced I've become about the importance of connections. So I always urge incoming law students to spend a lot of time getting to know their classmates

My big tip to people in law school is to study really hard and do well in your classes. I know we go through this whole dance with cover letters, resumes, and interviews, but the absolute best message you can send to employers is good grades and making law review.

1/ It's fine if you don't want to hang out with certain people in law school, depending on your career goals. For better or worse, however, a great deal of information about how to get certain legal jobs is communicated through "whisper networks."

Tip for the soon-to-be 1Ls: Don’t hang out with people who want to power rank the federal circuit courts by importance or prestige. Your law school experience will be infinitely better.

To folks who have questioned the point of this post (👇), this was my thinking: “It’s a Friday afternoon in August, I haven’t hit my informal quota of two posts during the week…. Oh, here’s a fun message from a reader that will trigger some debate!”
