Help us shape the future for the endangered Atlantic Whitefish. Through a range expansion initiative, we aim to help safeguard this species from global extinction by establishing another population in NS.

In Canada, brook floaters are found in rivers, streams, and lakes in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. This freshwater mussel is not plentiful in waters where it is found.

When found, brook floaters are often clustered in sand pockets behind rocks and stream banks. That’s how they stay put in fast-moving water! Learn more: ow.ly/faXN50ZjHw0

Atlantic whitefish have been around for a very long time! Atlantic whitefish, found in the Petite Rivière watershed in Nova Scotia, are the oldest of all living forms of whitefish.

Before moving between waterbodies, make sure to Clean, Drain, and Dry your boat. Last month at Mactaquac Headpond, NB, 33 vessels were decontaminated as part of ongoing work with partner organizations and anglers to help stop the spread of aquatic invasive species.

What’s happening beneath the Labrador Sea’s surface? 🌊 With scientists from the Ocean Frontier Institute’s Transforming Climate Action program, we're monitoring ocean conditions and tiny phytoplankton — microscopic algae that play an important role in the global carbon cycle.

Using trawl nets with undersized cod-ends to catch more groundfish is against the law because it prevents smaller, less mature fish and fish that aren’t being targeted from escaping the net to reproduce and contribute to the future of the stock.

Beluga whales do not typically occur in the Maritimes. The nearest beluga population is the endangered St. Lawrence Estuary population. Vagrant belugas occasionally show up in the Maritimes. If you encounter a beluga, ignore it and don’t interact with it to help keep it safe.

Remember to stay at least 100 metres away from any whale, dolphin, or porpoise. In the St. Larwence Estuary and Saguenay River, stay 400 metres away from beluga whales.

Fishing in a fish ladder prevents fish from migrating through their habitats as part of their life cycle, and undermines our efforts to support healthy stocks and sustainable fishing for all.
