Today I turn 55. I’m the fittest, sharpest, and happiest I’ve ever been. If I’m an outlier, it’s not because I’m built different or discovered a secret formula. The truth is far less glamorous: It’s a million tiny choices, compounded over decades. Here are 55 of them: 1.

Years ago I worked for a CEO who insisted on paying all of our vendors' invoices the day we received them. It's the opposite of how most companies operate so I asked him why. He said... "I want to be all of my vendors' best customer." Over time I saw the brilliance in this

As the only CMO to rebrand 3 public companies, I consider myself somewhat of an expert on the subject. This is the Zoolander of rebrands—it reads like a parody. That it's not makes it beyond cringeworthy. The tagline is "copy nothing" but somehow it already feels tired and

At a coffee shop this morning the tip screen defaulted to 5/10/15%—a breath of fresh air! I cheerfully selected 15% and complimented the barista on the modest amounts. He responded: “Oh, there’s an automatic 20% tip—that’s an additional tip. (2 lattes and scones = $10 tip)

I’ll admit it, I’m a water snob. We have Mountain Valley Spring delivered in 5 gallon *glass* bottles and use it for all drinking and cooking. I endorse this list.

I think about this place often. My friend paid $150k for this flat in Saint-Martin-Vésubie, “the Switzerland of France”, then put ~$50k into renovation. —World class ⛷️ 🚴‍♀️ 🧗‍♂️ —Great weather year-round —50 steps from the local market —1 hr from a beach & airport in Nice

In 1989 I randomly sat next to a cute girl at college orientation. I mustered the courage to say hi. I’ve been married to that girl for 26 years. In 1999 a friend invited me to try rock climbing. I said yes and discovered a life-long passion. In 2017 while sitting in a board

They don’t build ‘em like this any more. Due to the airline meltdown I stayed overnight in Chicago at the Hyatt Regency O’Hare. It’s an architectural gem from the early 70’s. Its signature feature is a massive brutalist atrium. Two more fun facts…🧵

The most fun I ever had negotiating a salary: Years ago I hired a guy to a junior marketing role. He was a bike mechanic with no relevant experience, but he had an engineer’s mind and was funny as heck. I asked him to call me to discuss compensation…

You want your people to be beyond satisfied. It’s not just about being generous, it’s good business. It puts a an intangible but powerful dynamic in place. The ROI on good people, properly motivated, is tenfold.

Within a few years he ran digital marketing, making six figures. I’m pretty sure he would have taken a bullet for me. Here’s my point: When it comes to people—especially those with high potential—don’t bargain shop. You’re negotiating against yourself.
