I think their actual rule is they need to be self-sufficient. So they avoid modern technology in order to avoid dependency, not because they hate new things per se.

another crank theory: i think ADHD has to do with the fact that humans traditionally rely a lot on social motivation. my guess is that many cases of ADHD would be solved by an authority figure following you around and yelling at you whenever you slack off

I will bravely take the middle ground that preferences around conversational intensity exist and may vary from person-to-person. The kernel of truth though is that if you refuse to engage in small talk you are missing a lot of interesting conversational opportunities.
