Southern Baptists will truly live up to our moniker as Great Commission Baptists when the outrage expressed toward the men of our tribe who never “preach” the Gospel (cf. Romans 10:14-17) exceeds the outrage expressed toward the women of our tribe who actually do.

It is with deep disappointment but strong conviction that I have sent the following letter to Dr. Michael Spradlin prayerfully requesting him to reconsider the decision of MABTS to host the premier of a film whose trailer contains scandalous and scurrilous slander against @SWBTS.

I am SBC by conviction. I love the SBC. I am indebted to the SBC. I am blessed to lead an SBC entity. I am grateful for our SBC heritage. I believe in our SBC future. But I know one thing for sure: God does not need the SBC. God is God. The SBC needs God—not the other way around.

Recent events in SBC life increasingly lead me to wonder if we expended energies/efforts in the Conservative Resurgence to affirm our belief in an inerrant Bible whose ethical teachings we have no intention of actually living out? Inerrancy with integrity is the need of the hour.

If America really was/is a Christian nation—as my Twitter feed indicates some are claiming today—then where are the cries to repent and believe instead of just calls to register and go vote? Don’t reduce the Bible to a political prop and Jesus to a candidate consultant, please.

40 years ago, some SBC seminaries had profs who: —Embraced a Bultmannian NT demythology —Denied Jesus’s physical, bodily resurrection —Rejected the OT miraculous events —Advocated pro-abortion positions That’s real liberalism. None of our SBC seminaries have any such profs today.

Whenever SBC’ers reflect on the Conservative Resurgence, let us be honest enough to acknowledge that those who led may well have been used by God but were nevertheless mere mortals and fallible beings. Whatever is worth preserving must center around ideas/issues, not icons/idols.
