fun story: terry tao was on both my and my brother's committee. he solved both our dissertation problems before we were done talking, each of us got "wouldn't it have been easier to...outline of entire proof" 🫠

Anniversary of my PhD defense and leaving academia. Leaving academia has let me enjoy math more than I did when it was my job. If you're on the fence about industry / academia and want to learn more about that transition, my DM's are open.

haha, yeah - IIRC the biggest hesitation UCLA had about hiring him when he graduated princeton was he was too addicted to playing Civilization

"If you're stuck on a problem, then one way out is to interest Terence Tao" - Charlie Fefferman (the other harmonic analyst / full professor at 22 / Fields Medalist)

May I borrow Terrence Tao for a week to solve a few lasting problems in immunology?

eh, as you can probably intuit know there's more nuance than that. there's an analysis seminar every week, you present snippets of it every quarter. you talk about it over coffee, you nerd snipe them after colloqium, etc. you're not working in isolation or come up for air

There was a great line I couldn't quite remember from "One Hundred Years of Solitude" Search engines & ChatGPT couldn't recall it either from my bad description Wrote a little 20 line program to read the whole book and found it in a minute, cost 25 cents Wild times we live in

Nah, born right on time. Today you can get a CS PhD by praying to an LLM in a while loop to order a pizza and seeing if you actually get pepperoni

You can do constrained sampling in ChatGPT and micromanage its output. The catch? You only get one token. But you can do a lot with that one token. You can make it a classifier, a logic gate, or have it choose tools deductively. Here's how 🧵 From my talk this week @trychroma
