Something Wicked V – Gather the Brethren!

Something Wicked V – Gather the Brethren!

Even though the Carnival of Chaos’ daemonic henchmen are extremely good early on in a campaign, I usually want to get my warbands up to six heroes as fast as possible, which made the inclusion of some experience gaining Brethren in the starting warband mandatory. More Brethren (especially with bows) will sure follow as the Nurglings’ value will decrease over time, but for now two of them seemed sufficient.

Despite that a juggler was my first idea for the Brethren, the first Poxwalker I clipped out of the sprue was just destined for card player conversion with his two fitting arms. So I made some playing cards out of cardboard and gave him a hand of cards just like the original Carnival Master had. With a twist at the elbow his upper left arm just looked like he’s about to pick a card with his crooked fingers.

The other henchman is kind of unspectacular compared to his card playing brother, but it was an easy and yet fitting conversion of the Poxwalker as I just exchanged the broken gun for a nice mallet so he can fixate all those tent pegs for the carnival. Also it’s one of the few Poxwalkers with real trousers. πŸ˜€

Something Wicked IV – Brutality

Something Wicked IV – Brutality

After hitting a wall with my Mary Poppins Nurgling (making a tiny umbrella proved to beΒ really annoying), I decided to work again on the warband’s two Brutes.

As mentioned before, I switched the Verses Brute’s weapon head for something hammer-like (thanks to IKEA’s free pencils) and modelled a fool’s cap for him. Now he fits way better into the whole carnival theme and I got a bit more cloth to paint in the Darkmoon Faire colours. πŸ™‚

For the second Brute I wanted a more robust looking fellow and found a spare Ork Runtherd in my stash. A quick leg swap (with another spare Savage Orc) provided a nice base and the Runtherd’s weapon was easily converted into another double-handed hammer from IKEA. His left forearm came from the Blightkings kit and gave me both some swollen flesh as well as uneven hands for a more freakish look.

The head was a problem at first and again I had a Plaguebearer head in mind, but I decided against it even though the orcish body would have compensated for the daemonic head. My second try was the same head as the other Brute as some shared feature.

This idea kind of stuck and finally I used another Blightking mask and gave him another sculpted cap. While the other Brute’s cap works just fine, this one probably needs some bells or balls at the end of the “spikes”. Instead of another star-shaped collar this Brute got one similar to the one Luther the Hunchback wears.

Something Wicked III – We need a hero

Something Wicked III – We need a hero

After finishing my two Plaguebearers (of which only one made it to my starting warband list^^) I started with the first of my carnival heroes. For income maximisation I will use all available heroes from the start which means using a Carnival Master, two Brutes and two Tainted. To stay with the “inspired by” theme of the daemons my first Tainted is based on the midget running gag from “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus”.

Originally I obtained the Ironguts Gnoblar as a mutant for Inq28, but never came around to use it. So I cut the backpack hook and replaced the club with a bell from the Plague Drones command. The head also came from my renegades’ stash of Dark Vengeance cultists and got a nice new clown hat. The buttons got a bit large and wobbly, so I probably will get rid of them and use the heads of pin needles instead. πŸ™‚

For the first Brute I got inspired by Verses the Persian from “The Twelve Tasks of Asterix” with his frail stature and the massive right arm. πŸ˜€

The base miniature didn’t need a lot of work aas the Poxwalkers are such amazing sculpts already. Its right arm had to go anyway and so the Poxwalker with bionic arm was nice fit in the first place. A spare Black Orcs arm was just big enough for the visual imbalance I aimed for and a 2mm brass rod seemed a fitting hilt for his double-handed weapon. The weapon’s head sponsored by another Plague Drone still doesn’t fully convince me and maybe a simple hammer might be better.

Finally some more sculpting work to get the circus theme and a Blightking helmet completed the Brute. Before settling on the helmet it had a fly-like Plaguebearer head which looked really cool, but just didn’t fit a human model as it just made the Brute look like another daemon.

This means 2/5 heroes and 2/8 henchmen are done now and will do my four Nurglings next to bump that counter up fast. πŸ˜€

Something Wicked II – For the memes

Something Wicked II – For the memes

To match my warband’s first Plaguebearer I needed new inspiration to create something equally bizarre as the Gene Kelly daemon. While browsing through an image search for old carnival and circus performances I stumbled over a pictured unicyclist and remembered a YouTube video I saw like ages ago – the Portland Unipiper. πŸ˜€

For those who didn’t have the pleasure to know the Unipiper, I put an educational video below:

Now off to the conversion itself. Like my first Plaguebearer this one is based on a Plague Drone rider with some additional parts from the regular Plaguebearers kit.

The bagpipe started as a simple triple flute, which I cut in half and stuck all parts into a green stuff bag. To compensate for the missing mouthpiece I just used a head with trunk and modelled it into the bag.

The unicycle was more of a rushed job as I didn’t find any fitting wheels in my bitzbox and therefore just made one out of several layers of cardboard. I still need to add some structure to the wheel as well as pedals.

A floating High Elf cape made the model a lot more dynamic and allows me to add some carnival cloth colours to the otherwise naked model. πŸ™‚

My first Tainted is nearly done as well and I’ve got a lot of ideas left for my remaining warband members. πŸ˜€

  • A Mary Poppins Nurgling with umbrella and hat
  • A clown Nurgling balancing on a ball
  • A Nurgling with vest and fez for the Carnival Master
  • Someone who juggles with three Nurglings
  • The Carnival Master with a street organ

Something Wicked I – Rotting in the rain

Something Wicked I – Rotting in the rain

While I tried to get my huge pile of bitz sorted, I discovered that my Nurgle Renegades provided enough leftovers to create a whole new warband for Mordheim. The Carnival of Chaos is one of those warbands I didn’t play with or even against in my whole Mordheim “career”, but as a regular Possessed player it was always an intriguing warband. Especially as it would give me the option to use the darkmoon faire’s colour scheme with green, purple and yellow. πŸ™‚

So I grabbed some parts from my daemonic artillery conversions and picked a fitting theme song for my project. πŸ˜€

Nevertheless my first conversion brings more Gene Kelly vibes along and so the concept for my first Plaguebearer was born, as the model obviously likes to rot in Mordheim’s acid rain. The daemon still needs some green stuff filling and I’m not completely satisfied with the nurgly banner top. Therefore I’m probably just going to exchange it for some street signs.

Sigvald’s magnificent molesters I – Skervaldr WIP

Sigvald’s magnificent molesters I – Skervaldr WIP

Despite getting my boxed set of Shadespire in December, I didn’t have much time to delve a lot into the joys of building my anticipated Slaaneshi Eternals warband.

Nonetheless my first model is on a good way to come to an end and is going to get finished as soon as I can decide on what to do with his left hand. πŸ™„

My photoshop concept for Skervaldr Kingsbane drew a lot of attention and positive feedback in the Shadespire group, therefore I stuck mostly with my overall design.

However, I changed details like the blade and added additional bits to give the model more individuality.

The blade is a trimmed down part from the Dark Eldar Talos kit and needs a skull or rock to support the shorter blade as well as some work on the hilt and cross-guard to make it look more fitting. For his left hand I’m still struggling between a shield like in the concept (easy fix, but kind of weird combined with a bastard sword), some chains (maybe with flesh hooks), an icon or something totally different. πŸ˜€

Any suggestions? πŸ™‚

40k demo board

As mentioned in my project roundup, I made a new gaming table for my local GW store so the new store manager could get rid of the dull old version (a simple plate with some small ruins and pipes scattered on it πŸ™„ ).

Dabbling a bit in SketchUp the same evening I was asked to make the board resulted in this first version. πŸ™‚

I had been advised to recycle the old tiles from the Sector Imperialis board as well as some leftovers from the Shadow War: Armageddon buildings. So I went for a mdf board with a polystyrene block for the upper level and hacked a part of the street tiles off. The cathedral would be made out of a full Imperial Sector box and the remaining street parts used to hide the ugly polystyrene.

After some re-evaluation the wooden board was dropped in favour of two Realm of Battle tiles from AoS (somehow these are cheaper for the store than having to cope with a 5€ bill from the hardware store) and the street layout changed quite a bit.

With this version in mind, I began to build the board. Cutting the Realm of Battle tiles with just the old Citadel saw and cutters wasn’t fun at all as the tiles’ grid structure made them sturdy as hell, but with a lot of effort the tiles were brought into shape.

As you see, the promethium tank got a substructure, but everything else stuck to the 3D model. To hide the polystyrene I then overlayed the polystyrene walls with sections from the street tiles and finished both the cathedral and the industrial tower. While the tower’s exhausts and pipes grew to a huge height, the cathedral just became a real colossus and remained split in two parts to handle it for painting.

The last step step before getting the paint ready was to seal off the remaining polystyrene parts and to blend the street tiles into the polystyrene edge. For this I taped all the edges and coated the whole thing in lots of rubble paste. The AoS reliefs on the lower tiles also got their share of rubble paste. πŸ˜€

On the final day (and after giving the rubble paste more than enough time to dry completely) the manager and I painted about nine hours to get the table ready for the store evaluation on the following day. That’s also why the photos I made at 11 pm are a bit shaky and overexposed by the camera flash. 😳

There are still some unpainted details and errors on the model, which the store manager willΒ fix when he has the time and the cathedral will get some LED stripes for even more epicness. πŸ˜€

In the end the gaming table might not be perfect, but for the short time I had to create the new demo board I’m really satisfied with the outcome.

Ghost of Projects Present

After the slight whining in my last post it’s time for a “what’s on my plate” update. πŸ˜€

First of all – this:

Despite having just one game under my belt yet, this game provides a lot things I really like:

  • A limited effort to get into the game on par with a regular board game (which I also like a lot)
  • A card system with customised decks and therefore strategies (probably due to a shady tcg and ccg past with MTG & Warlord)
  • A highly competitive character of the game and it being suited (or at least promoted) for intense tournament play

So I’m certain that this will boost my hobby motivation for quite some time. πŸ™‚

My main project for Shadespire will be a Slaaneshi Eternals warband. The models reminded me so much of Sigvald the Magnificent that the idea instantly came to mind and the Shadespire group on fb went totally nuts over my Photoshop mockups for the warband. πŸ˜€

Next is a scenery project I just finished made ready to use for the new manager of my local GW store. He was in dire need of a new demo board for 40k and after showing him a quick SketchUp model of my idea, he sampled the required kits and sent his assistant to the hardware store.

The paint job needs some cleanup and I need to add the missing Galvanic Servohaulers (and some decent photos with better lighting), but both the store manager and I are satisfied by getting so far in just four days. πŸ˜€

And finally a lot has been done for our own Mordheim supplement featuring a new setting based inΒ The Sealed City.

This meant much work on the rules and a lot more with Adobe InDesign to make all the rules pretty enough for a public audience.

Tomorrow we’re going to release about two dozen pages of new content including warbands, scenarios, equipment and campaign rules as well as adjustments to all existing previews. πŸ™‚

That’s it for the second instalment of my project series. Next up are some in-depth posts about the projects above and then we’ll see what the Ghost of Projects Yet to Come will bring. πŸ˜€

Ghost of Projects Past

Tomorrow one of many abandoned projects will be shipped to its new owner and this made me look back on all the projects in the recent past and I wondered where my hobby motivation hid the last months.

The year started promising with a Grot Rebels kill team for Heralds of Ruin – one of the first fully painted and therefore completed projects for some time.

Also the HoR gretchin were a hell of a lot fun to build, paint and play. Definitely my highlight this year so far. πŸ˜€

On the not so well documented site I started a full Chaos Space Marines Possessed army led by a friendly fly. Apart from the army itself the project had the primary aim to get a full 1850 pts. tournament army done for under 100€.

With 28 heavily converted and customised Possessed, six Chaos Sorcerers and the custom Daemon Prince I ended up at ~80€ and proved doubters wrong that 40k is always expensive and on tournament level even more so. I played several games with the army, which were both funΒ  and challenging (and I learned again a lot about the 7th edition of 40k with a huge death star and its 18 mastery levels).

But with the release of 40k’s 8th edition the army became both bad and also invalid in some tournaments. As you may have guessed, this army will soon have a new owner. πŸ˜‰

One of my biggest wargaming loves – the Dark Mechanicum – didn’t see a gaming table this year due to a dwindling gaming community for the Horus Heresy and an incompatibility of their rules with new edition of 40k.

And although I had finally found a colour scheme for them that I liked, the army neither saw a drop of paint nor got any of the additional models on its “to buy” and “to build” lists (including a four-legged Thanatar, more Castellax, as well as Anacharis Scoria and his Homunculex).

Back to 40k I had high hopes for my Renegades of Vraks in the new edition. I already liked how they played in 7th edition, but to resolve the army’s ~70 blast templates was really time consuming and rightfully annoyed many of my opponents. πŸ˜€

Therefore the foretold death of templates in the 8th edition didn’t hit me as hard as other veteran players and indices by GW and FW on the same power level could have meant more acceptance for Forge World stuff.

Unfortunately my expectations weren’t met at all. Instead of faster games I had to roll dozens of random shots and my main gaming group incomprehensibly banned FW again on their tournaments. The 8th edition is fun, some things like psychic powers got fixed and yet I somehow don’t like it. It just feels off and even though 40k had been my main wargame for 17 years, its days of supremacy in my hobby may have come to an end… :/

Lamplighter of Selhoff Β© ClintCearley

Off to fantasy settings and even more nonstarters. Hinterlands and my AoS28 project started off fine, but lost a lot of steam early on and finally ended up in the drawer after one game only.

Another candidate was Frostgrave, but never really took off even though many players in my gaming group wanted to start with a Frostgrave warband as a gateway drug for Mordheim.

And last but not least my elaborate map-based Mordheim campaign in the Border Town Burning setting died end of summer and left me without any regular gaming events.

So much for all the stuff that was going on (or not^^) this year and a little insight into the reasons behind my lack of new posts lately. In the next post I will show you some of my current projects and what kinda got me back into the hobby again. πŸ™‚
