To get an Azure Maps Subscription Key, you must first have an Azure account and a valid subscription. The key is generated when you create an Azure Maps Account (Resource) in the Azure Portal.
Set Up an Azure Account #
If you do not already have an Azure account and a subscription, you must create one first.
- Create a Microsoft Account: If you don’t have a Microsoft account (Outlook, Hotmail, or a corporate Microsoft 365 account), you’ll need one.
- Get an Azure Subscription:
- Navigate to the Azure Pricing page
- Choose your preferred option:
- Azure Free Account: Best for evaluation. Includes credit and free amounts of select services. Requires a credit card for identity verification, but you won’t be charged unless you explicitly upgrade.
- Pay-As-You-Go: For immediate production use.
Create the Azure Maps Resource #
Once you have an active Azure subscription, you can create the Maps resource which contains your key.
- Go to the Azure Portal
- Sign in with your Microsoft account credentials.
- Create a new resource, by clicking on the “+ Create a resource” button in the upper-left corner.
- Search for Azure Maps and Create the Maps resource.
- Complete the Resource Creation form to complete the process.
Getting Your Primary Key #
Once the resource is deployed, you can find your key within the resource settings.
- From within the Azure Portal click on Go to Resource link to view the new resource.
- On the left-hand menu navigate to Settings > Authentication.
- Copy the Primary Key
- Add this key within our settings area under Maps > Settings > Azure Subscription Key.
With this complete, your key should be installed and your maps should be fully functional. You will see tileset previews working as expected, along with any Azure specific engine features.
