This method is similar to the <code>triggerHandler()<\/code> method, except that triggerHandler() does not trigger the default behavior of the event.<\/p>\n<p>Several jQuery plugins use .trigger() method to to notify other sections of code that an application specific event has happened. Below, we&#8217;ll have a look at an example of its usage and then give some more information on handlers that can be triggered and why you should use an alternative method like <code>triggerHandler()<\/code> for security reasons.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n[ulp id=&#8217;qGGDqWnle19VavkM&#8217;]<\/p>\n<h2>1. Basic Document Setup<\/h2>\n<p>To begin, create a new HTML document, and add the following basic syntax:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"brush:xml\">\r\n&lt;!DOCTYPE html&gt;\r\n&lt;html&gt;\r\n&lt;head&gt;\r\n\t&lt;title&gt;jQuery Trigger Example&lt;\/title&gt;\r\n&lt;\/head&gt;\r\n&lt;body&gt;\r\n&lt;!-- STYLE SECTION --&gt;\r\n&lt;style type=\"text\/css\"&gt;\r\n\r\n&lt;\/style&gt;\r\n\r\n&lt;!-- HTML SECTION --&gt;\r\n\r\n&lt;!-- JAVASCRIPT SECTION --&gt;\r\n&lt;script src=\"jquery-1.11.3.min.js\"&gt;&lt;\/script&gt;\r\n\r\n&lt;script type=\"text\/javascript\"&gt;\r\n\r\n&lt;\/script&gt;\r\n\r\n&lt;\/body&gt;\r\n&lt;\/html&gt;\r\n<\/pre>\n<p>Note that jQuery library is included as a local file here, you might consider downloading it from the official website <a href=\"http:\/\/jquery.com\/download\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>2. Method Application and Notes<\/h2>\n<p>Below, let&#8217;s take into consideration an example of the usage of <code>.trigger()<\/code> and then talk about what else it can do.<\/p>\n<h3>2.1 <strong>.trigger()<\/strong> Application<\/h3>\n<p>To apply the method, first add two elements, <code>div<\/code> and a <code>button<\/code>. We&#8217;ll use the button to trigger a function to the div.<\/p>\n<pre class=\"brush:xml\">\r\n&lt;!-- HTML SECTION --&gt;\r\n&lt;button&gt;Click Me&lt;\/button&gt;\r\n&lt;div&gt;I am &lt;\/div&gt;\r\n<\/pre>\n<p>Next, in the JS section first select the <code>div<\/code> tag and append some text to it on the <code>click<\/code> handler. Then, on button click, <code>trigger<\/code> the <strong>click<\/strong> event so that text append happens.<\/p>\n<pre class=\"brush:java\">\r\n&lt;!-- JAVASCRIPT SECTION --&gt;\r\n&lt;script type=\"text\/javascript\"&gt;\r\n$(document).ready(function(){\r\n $('div').on('click', function(){\r\n $('div').append('someone, ');\r\n\r\n });\r\n $('button').click(function(){\r\n $('div').trigger('click')\r\n });\r\n});\r\n&lt;\/script&gt;\r\n<\/pre>\n<p>The result in the browser would be as follows:<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.webcodegeeks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/trigger1.gif\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.webcodegeeks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/trigger1.gif\" alt=\"trigger1\" width=\"800\" height=\"380\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7331\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>2.2 What handlers can be .trigger()&#8217;d?<\/h3>\n<p>jQuery&#8217;s event handling system is a layer on top of native browser events. When an event handler is added using <code>.on( \"click\", function() {...} )<\/code>, it can be triggered using jQuery&#8217;s <code>.trigger( \"click\" )<\/code> because jQuery stores a reference to that handler when it is originally added.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, it will trigger the JavaScript inside the <code>onclick<\/code> attribute. The <code>.trigger()<\/code> function cannot be used to mimic native browser events, such as clicking on a file input box or an anchor tag. This is because, there is no event handler attached using jQuery&#8217;s event system that corresponds to these events.<\/p>\n<h3>2.3 <strong>.trigger()<\/strong> vs <strong>.triggerHandler()<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>There are four differences between <code>.trigger()<\/code> and <code>.triggerHandler()<\/code>:<\/p>\n<p>1. <code>.triggerHandler()<\/code> only triggers the event on the first element of a jQuery object.<\/p>\n<p>2. <code>.triggerHandler()<\/code> cannot be chained. It returns the value that is returned by the last handler, not a jQuery object.<\/p>\n<p>3. <code>.triggerHandler()<\/code> will not cause the default behavior of the event (such as a form submission).<\/p>\n<p>4. Events triggered by <code>.triggerHandler()<\/code>, will not bubble up the DOM hierarchy. Only the handlers on the single element will fire.<\/p>\n<h3>2.4 Not Recommended Simply to Execute Specific Functions<\/h3>\n<p>While this method has its uses, it should not be used simply to call a function that was bound as a click handler. Instead, you should store the function you want to call in a variable, and pass the variable name when you do your binding. Then, you can call the function itself whenever you want, without the need for <code>.trigger()<\/code>.<\/p>\n<pre class=\"brush:java\">\r\n&lt;!-- JAVASCRIPT SECTION --&gt;\r\n&lt;script type=\"text\/javascript\"&gt;\r\n\/\/ Triggering an event handler the right way\r\nvar foo = function( event ) {\r\n if ( event ) {\r\n console.log( event );\r\n } else {\r\n console.log( \"This didn't come from an event!\" );\r\n }\r\n};\r\n$( \"p\" ).on( \"click\", foo );\r\nfoo(); \/\/ instead of $( \"p\" ).trigger( \"click\" )\r\n&lt;\/script&gt;\r\n<\/pre>\n<p>The result would be identically the same.<\/p>\n<h3>2.5 Pass Arbitrary Data To and Thorugh an Event Object<\/h3>\n<p>To pass arbitrary data to an event you can do like so:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"brush:java\">\r\n&lt;!-- JAVASCRIPT SECTION --&gt;\r\n&lt;script type=\"text\/javascript\"&gt;\r\n$( \"p\" )\r\n .click(function( event, a, b ) {\r\n \/\/ When a normal click fires, a and b are undefined\r\n \/\/ for a trigger like below a refers to \"foo\" and b refers to \"bar\"\r\n })\r\n .trigger( \"click\", [ \"foo\", \"bar\" ] );\r\n&lt;\/script&gt;\r\n<\/pre>\n<p>To pass arbitrary data through an event object:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"brush:java\">\r\n&lt;!-- JAVASCRIPT SECTION --&gt;\r\n&lt;script type=\"text\/javascript\"&gt;\r\nvar event = jQuery.Event( \"logged\" );\r\nevent.user = \"foo\";\r\nevent.pass = \"bar\";\r\n$( \"body\" ).trigger( event );\r\n&lt;\/script&gt;\r\n<\/pre>\n<p>or use this alternative way:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"brush:java\">\r\n&lt;!-- JAVASCRIPT SECTION --&gt;\r\n&lt;script type=\"text\/javascript\"&gt;\r\n$( \"body\" ).trigger({\r\n type:\"logged\",\r\n user:\"foo\",\r\n pass:\"bar\"\r\n});\r\n&lt;\/script&gt;\r\n<\/pre>\n<h2>3. Conclusion<\/h3>\n<p>To conclude, <code>.trigger()<\/code> is a rather specific-case method, and not used a lot. The <code>.triggerHandler()<\/code> method is jQuery&#8217;s way of preventing the problems that trigger can create. Basically, the method will execute all handlers and behaviors attached to the matched elements for the given event type. Well, the word is self-explanatory, trigger.<\/p>\n<h2>4.
