The values are string encodings of the latitude and longitude points using the <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/maps\/documentation\/utilities\/polylinealgorithm\">Google encoded polyline algorithm format<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If we navigate to that page we get the following explanation:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Polyline encoding is a lossy compression algorithm that allows you to store a series of coordinates as a single string.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I tried out a couple of my polylines using the <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/maps\/documentation\/utilities\/polylineutility\">interactive polyline encoder utility<\/a> which worked well once I realised that I needed to escape backslashes (\u201c\\\u201d) in the polyline before pasting it into the tool.<\/p>\n<p>Now that I\u2019d figured out how to map one run it was time to automate the process.<\/p>\n<h3>Leaflet and OpenStreetMap<\/h3>\n<p>I\u2019ve previously had a good experience using <a href=\"http:\/\/leafletjs.com\/\">Leaflet<\/a> so I was keen to use that and luckily came across <a href=\"http:\/\/stackoverflow.com\/a\/40728445\/1093511\">a Stack Overflow answer<\/a> showing how to do what I wanted.<\/p>\n<p>I created a HTML file and manually pasted in a couple of my runs (not forgetting to escape those backslashes!) to check that they worked:<\/p>\n<p><cite>blog.html<\/cite><\/p>\n<pre class=\"brush:xml; wrap-lines:false\">&lt;html&gt;\r\n &lt;head&gt;\r\n Street Map<\/h3>\n<p>The final step is to automate the whole thing so that I can see all of my runs.<\/p>\n<p>I wrote the following script to call the Strava API and save the polyline for every run to a CSV file:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"brush:py\">import requests\r\nimport os\r\nimport sys\r\nimport csv\r\n\u00a0\r\ntoken = os.environ[\"TOKEN\"]\r\nheaders = {'Authorization': \"Bearer {0}\".format(token)}\r\n\u00a0\r\nwith open(\"runs.csv\", \"w\") as runs_file:\r\n writer = csv.writer(runs_file, delimiter=\",\")\r\n writer.writerow([\"id\", \"polyline\"])\r\n\u00a0\r\n page = 1\r\n while True:\r\n r = requests.get(\"https:\/\/www.strava.com\/api\/v3\/athlete\/activities?page={0}\".format(page), headers = headers)\r\n response = r.json()\r\n\u00a0\r\n if len(response) == 0:\r\n break\r\n else:\r\n for activity in response:\r\n r = requests.get(\"https:\/\/www.strava.com\/api\/v3\/activities\/{0}?include_all_efforts=true\".format(activity[\"id\"]), headers = headers)\r\n polyline = r.json()[\"map\"][\"polyline\"]\r\n writer.writerow([activity[\"id\"], polyline])\r\n page += 1<\/pre>\n<p>I then wrote a simple script using <a href=\"http:\/\/flask.pocoo.org\/\">Flask<\/a> to parse the CSV files and send a JSON representation of my runs to a slightly modified version of the HTML page that I described above:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"brush:py\">from flask import Flask\r\nfrom flask import render_template\r\nimport csv\r\nimport json\r\n\u00a0\r\napp = Flask(__name__)\r\n\u00a0\r\n@app.route('\/')\r\ndef my_runs():\r\n runs = []\r\n with open(\"runs.csv\", \"r\") as runs_file:\r\n reader = csv.DictReader(runs_file)\r\n\u00a0\r\n for row in reader:\r\n runs.append(row[\"polyline\"])\r\n\u00a0\r\n return render_template(\"leaflet.html\", runs = json.dumps(runs))\r\n\u00a0\r\nif __name__ == \"__main__\":\r\n app.run(port = 5001)<\/pre>\n<p>I changed the following line in the HTML file:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"brush:java\">var encodedRoutes = {{ runs|safe }};<\/pre>\n<p>Now we can launch our Flask web server:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"brush:py\">$ python app.py \r\n * Running on http:\/\/127.0.0.1:5001\/ (Press CTRL+C to quit)<\/pre>\n<p>And if we navigate to <cite>http:\/\/127.0.0.1:5001\/<\/cite> we can see all my runs that went near Westminster:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.webcodegeeks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/2017-04-29_16-32-00.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-17016\"
