Communitas Lecture Series: Vance Byrd
Lecture/Readings
Vance Byrd is a scholar of late-eighteenth- and nineteenth-century German literature who investigates how literary and print culture intersect with the history of visual media. He will be speaking about his current book project, Listening to Panoramas, which looks beyond statues to discover how panoramic forms played a pivotal role in transatlantic visual and sonic cultures of commemoration. Panoramas gave audiences around the world the opportunity to immerse themselves in stories about natural and urban landscapes as well as bloody battle scenes depicted on larger-than-life circular paintings. This book proposes that the emotions produced by the sonic and visual effects at panorama shows determine how the past is remembered and politicized. Furthermore, it investigates how Black artists have turned to the panoramic form to resist narratives about defeat and victory in the American Civil War and to reinscribe the history of the Black freedom struggles onto the medium.
The Communitas Lecture Series is a set of visiting artists, scholars, and design series. This series is free and open to the public!

Five Research-Based Practices that Promote Engagement

This Sparkshop will share how you can implement these ideas into your instructional practices, classroom environment, and the behind-the-scenes administrative work you do to keep a course running. As with all Sparkshops, there will be opportunities for exploring and learning from one another.

As part of the event, the Fry Street Quartet will perform Lek, a captivating piece by composer Nicolas Lell Benavides, written for string quartet and electronics. The dynamic and evocative work beautifully illustrates how art and nature intertwine to tell compelling stories.

The workshop is based on the workshop, Peak Performing Professor, and the book, The Peak Performing Professor: A Practical Guide to Productivity and Happiness, both by Susan Robison (The Destressor Professor).

Opera Double-bill: "L’Enfant et les sortilèges & Rusalka" (Act 3)
Arts/Entertainment
USU Opera Theatre will close their 2024-2025 season with a fun multi-part program of opera and musical theatre favorites highlighting all our students with two full programs produced over three nights April 10-12, at 7:30 in the Morgan Theatre.
On April 10 & 12 we will present what we could best be described as an “Opera Creature Feature double-bill”. On this program we will perform all of Ravel’s comedic one-act opera L’Enfant et les sortilèges followed by the final act of Dvorák's tragic retelling of the classic Little Mermaid story in his opera Rusalka.
L’Enfant et les sortilèges (“The Child and the Spells”), with music by Maurice Ravel and libretto by Colette, tells the story of a bad child that has a bad day when everything around him comes alive to teach him a lesson about respect and responsibility. Rusalka (“The Water Nymph”), with music by Antonín Dvorák and libretto by Jaroslav Kvapil, narrates the original version of the Little Mermaid fairytale, albeit one that doesn’t quite end happily-ever-after. Both selections will be sung in their original languages of French and Czech with piano accompaniment in a semi-produced format.

Early life in a small town on the Wolf River introduced him to the experience of nature as a playground, as an escape, and as series of evolving places. Spurred by observations of human caused environmental degradation, Todd found landscape architecture as means of melding ecological reparation with art, while studying geology and native plant community restoration in the midwest. Drawn to wilder environments, Todd moved west immediately after undergraduate school, eventually joining Civitas and remaining there for more than twenty years. Emerging opportunities for change lead him to join Peter Walker Partners (PWP) in Berkeley, and later the Office of Cheryl Barton (O|CB) in San Francisco. Now with SCAPE in their San Francisco office, he applies decades of experience in a collaborative team-focused approach, blending critical design thinking with problem-solving and mentoring. His project experience varies in scale, complexity, and budget—including urban parks and gardens; educational, medical, and corporate campuses; waterfronts; and urban infill redevelopments.
Science Unwrapped: Celebrate Undergrad Research - Mathematicians Matt Young and Seth Porter
Panel Discussion/Presentation | Science Unwrapped
Science Unwrapped, the public STEM outreach program of USU's College of Science, invites inquiring of minds of all ages to participate in science learning fun. Admission is free. Each event begins with a brief science talk following by hands-on learning activities and refreshments.
Our Spring 2025 theme is "Celebrate Undergrad Research" in recognition of USU's 2025 "Year of Undergraduate Research."
April 11 Speakers: Mathematicians Matt Young, faculty member in USU’s Department of Mathematics and Statistics, and undergraduate researcher Seth Porter, conduct research to define and compute algebraic invariants of knots in a three-dimensional vector space. A knot is an embedding of a circle into a three-dimensional space. A knot invariant is a quantity assigned to a knot that remains the same for any other knot that is topologically equivalent to it. Matt and Seth will “untangle” this concept, while explaining the benefits of getting involved in undergraduate research.

Museum and Music: Raven Chacon Drum Grid
Arts/Entertainment
Raven Chacon (Diné) is a composer, performer, and installation artist born at Fort Defiance, Navajo Nation. In 2022, he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in Music for his composition Voiceless Mass, and in 2023 was awarded the MacArthur Fellowship. He has exhibited, performed, or had works performed at LACMA, The Whitney Biennial, Borealis Festival, SITE Santa Fe, The Kennedy Center, and more. As an educator, Chacon is the senior composer mentor for the Native American Composer Apprentice Project (NACAP). For Drum Grid, Raven Chacon uses a local neighborhood to orchestrate a call-and-response composition for numerous drummers, each positioned on a street corner or city system. Over time, new rhythms and patterns emerge as the surrounding cityscape creates echoes and polyphony. For Chacon, in performing Drum Grid, a community has the agency to change the landscape of their neighborhood, activating potential questions and new generative urgencies.

What not to do: Group analysis of the “The Worst Lecture Ever”
Workshop/Training | Sparkshops
Sit in your discomfort. This Sparkshop will center around the video "The Worst Lecture Ever," where attendees will analyze and debate the content, presentation style, and impact of this lecture. The session will delve into the elements that make the lecture "the worst," such as poor communication, lack of structure, and an overall disconnection from the students. We will then talk about what qualities make a good lecturer and how this contrasts with the video and what strategies could have been employed to avoid the failures displayed in the video.
LAEP Speaker Series: Heather Henry, The Right Place and the Right Home - The Right Solution
Lecture/Readings
About the Lecture When every turn of the channel, the page, or swipe of the screen shrieks about the breadth and depth of the housing crisis, it can be easy to insist that the solution simply lies in building more. Build it anywhere, at all cost. History tells us this cannot and does not work. As builders, developers, designers, and planners we have the power to make better decisions. And we all know with great power comes great responsibility (thanks, Spiderman). We’ll explore multiple case studies for how to make choices about the right places, right types of homes, and right creative programs to bring lasting housing solutions to bear in all types of communities.

Participants will learn about the dynamics of contrapower harassment, its impact on college and university environments, and strategies for responding to and preventing these behaviors.
