Our UKI-FNI Project has generated a First Edition of a Future Telecoms Roadmap Report.
It is provided as a Full Report for download or as a web-based flip-book for ease of navigation.
Access is available on request.
In this full report, we will be examining the evolving 5G/6G landscape and the integration of Terrestrial and Non-Terrestrial Telecoms systems through three specific vectors:
- The Global Standards Developing Organisations (SDOs) that help to regulate and formalise this space.
- Country-specific and international developments within 5G and 6G.
- Trends, developments, and new technologies as seen through academic journaling and research work.
This research delves into the dynamic landscape of wired and wireless communication technologies, focusing on the evolution from 5G to Beyond 5G (B5G) and the integration of terrestrial networks and non-terrestrial networks (TN-NTN) as the foundation for future networking and the emerging concept of 6G. The study explores the technological advancements, market trends, and potential applications shaping each phase of this progression.
This First Edition Roadmap Report has been commissioned and developed by this EPSRC UK-India Future Networks Initiative (UKI-FNI) project. It is a living document which will be added to periodically to reflect new and emerging trends in Future Telecoms Globally.
This initiative will explore new innovative solutions in hardware, software and protocols that will support the future integration of high-speed mobile systems with metro and core optical communications networks.
This project, which is part of a strategic collaboration with scientists and engineers in India, investigates advanced innovations in supply chains for hardware and software systems and provides connectivity and services for future digital networks, and a joint vision and research strategy in Beyond 5G, TN-NTN integration, and 6G. The project aims to increase competitiveness and choice of vendors that design,
manufacture and deploy systems such as antennae, transmission and switching equipment at base stations as well as the integration components that support backhaul transport and associated network management systems.
As part of this initiative, this comprehensive roadmap report is created to encapsulate the progress, developments, and research endeavours spanning the realms of 5G-advanced, Open-RAN, TN-NTN integration, and 6G, with a keen emphasis on global advancements across these domains.
This First Edition Roadmap should act as a useful reference and resource for Early Career Researchers, PhD students, those interested in technical standards and policy makers in the Telecoms domain.
