Outside of her work with The Knot Worldwide, Joyce is the executive director of The Seventh Wave, an arts and literary nonprofit that champions art in the space of social issues. She is currently at work on a book of essays about time, silence, and liminal spaces as they relate to agency, power, and intercultural understanding.

Experience

Joyce Chen is a writer, editor, and community builder who draws inspiration from many coastal cities: she was born and raised in Los Angeles, spent her early professional years in New York City, and currently resides in Seattle. She got her start covering red carpet premieres and reporting on crime and human interest stories for People magazine, and over the years, has continued to write entertainment and human interest stories for publications as wide-ranging as Rolling Stone, Refinery29, Architectural Digest, the New York Daily News, and Us Weekly, among others.

In addition to her journalistic work, Joyce also dabbles in creative nonfiction, and her creative writing credits include Poets & Writers, Lit Hub, Narratively, and Slant’d, among others. She frequently contributes op-eds to Paste magazine, and writes book reviews for Orion and Hyphen magazines. She is a proud VONA alum and the executive director of The Seventh Wave, an arts and literary nonprofit that champions art in the space of social issues. She is currently at work on a book of essays about time, silence, and liminal spaces as they relate to agency, power, and intercultural understanding.

Education

Joyce graduated with dual degrees in print journalism and psychology from the University of Southern California, and served as the editor-in-chief at The Daily Trojan, USC’s iconic student-run newspaper. She spent a semester abroad at City University London, where she studied magazine journalism and reporting.

Joyce also holds an MFA in creative writing from The New School, where she studied with renowned writers like Greil Marcus, Zia Jaffrey, and Shelly Jackson.
