Toyah, TX

Adopted by: Arleigh V Hartkopf, My great-uncle Benjamin Weigel owned and operated a sulfur mine in the Toyah area in the 1940s. He also owned a one-room cabin near the railroad tracks, where he raised cantaloupes and kept a pig or two. Uncle Ben, his wife Flavia, and my cousin Jo Ann lived in Pecos, as did my Uncle Mickey Weigel. My parents and I moved to Pecos from Los Angeles in 1947, and my father worked for Uncle Ben for two years before we returned to Los Angeles.
