The built-in tools offered by macOS are not sufficient for me, mainly because of the image annotating tools and limited keyboard shortcuts support. For couple of days I used <a href=\"https:\/\/evernote.com\/intl\/en\/products\/skitch\">Skitch<\/a>, but then I found <a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/app\/annotate-capture-and-share\/id918207447?mt=12\">Annotate<\/a>, a light-weight and simple app with quite good keyboard shortcuts support. In this short blog post, I share how I currently work with <code>Annotate<\/code> app.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Note: Looking for a powerful screenshots taking tool for Windows? Checkout <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.codeleak.pl\/2014\/12\/greenshot-productive-screenshot-tool.html\">Greenshot<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why built-in tool are not sufficient?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>What is my usual screenshots workflow?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Take a screenshot, annotate it quickly with tools like arrow, shape and text, copy to clipboard and paste it anywhere (e.g. Slack, JIRA, e-mail or a document editor)<\/li><li>Open an image from clipboard, annotate it quickly, copy to clipboard and paste it anywhere<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>With <code>Annotate<\/code> this is all possible and it can be done pretty quickly with <strong>keyboard shortcuts<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"742\" height=\"517\" src=\"http:\/\/www.systemcodegeeks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/0-annotate.png\" alt=\"screenshots tool\" class=\"wp-image-4066\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.systemcodegeeks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/0-annotate.png 742w, https:\/\/www.systemcodegeeks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/0-annotate-300x209.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 742px) 100vw, 742px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Taking screenshots with keyboard shortcuts<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In my workflow, I disabled standard macOS <code>CMD+SHIFT+4<\/code> shortcut (<code>Save picture of selected area as a file<\/code>) and set it as <code>Crosshair snapshot<\/code> shortcut in <code>Annotate<\/code>. I also disabled <code>Windows snapshot<\/code> shortcut in <code>Annotate<\/code>, as the crosshair snapshot is powerful enough and provides possibility to select window (just press <code>spacebar<\/code> while in a crosshair mode to capture any window).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My settings:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.systemcodegeeks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/1-settings-shortcuts-1024x549.png\" alt=\"screenshots tool\" class=\"wp-image-4067\" width=\"768\" height=\"412\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.systemcodegeeks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/1-settings-shortcuts-1024x549.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.systemcodegeeks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/1-settings-shortcuts-300x160.png 300w, https:\/\/www.systemcodegeeks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/1-settings-shortcuts-768x412.png 768w, https:\/\/www.systemcodegeeks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/1-settings-shortcuts.png 1113w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>With the above, I can use standard macOS screenshots shortcuts while having the option to use <code>Annotate<\/code> &#8211; after screenshot is taken it won\u2019t be saved, but opened by <code>Annotate<\/code>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Note: Don\u2019t forget to run the tool at login.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Annotate with keyboard shortcuts<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When the screenshot is opened in <code>Annotate<\/code> you can annotate with some basic tools like arrow, text, shape, pencil. You can also blur selected area or you can crop the image.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"815\" height=\"64\" src=\"http:\/\/www.systemcodegeeks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/2-tools.png\" alt=\"screenshots tool\" class=\"wp-image-4068\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.systemcodegeeks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/2-tools.png 815w, https:\/\/www.systemcodegeeks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/2-tools-300x24.png 300w, https:\/\/www.systemcodegeeks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/2-tools-768x60.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 815px) 100vw, 815px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>All of these tools can be accessed with the keyboard shortcuts:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><code>A<\/code> &#8211; arrow<\/li><li><code>T<\/code> &#8211; text<\/li><li><code>O<\/code> &#8211; overlay<\/li><li><code>S<\/code> &#8211; shape<\/li><li><code>P<\/code> &#8211; pencil<\/li><li><code>C<\/code> &#8211; crop<\/li><li><code>B<\/code> &#8211; blur<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Copy to clipboard<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most used scenario for me is copying the screenshot to clipboard and pasting it e.g. either to <code>JIRA<\/code> issue or to <code>Slack<\/code> etc. Simply use <code>CMD+SHIFT+C<\/code> to copy the image to clipboard. Of course, with <code>Annotate<\/code> you can save the image to disk as well as include it in the message or email.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Note: There are issues with external services like Facebook, Twitter or Dropbox at this moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Open from clipboard<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to open any image from clipboard with <code>Annotate<\/code> use <code>CMD+SHIFT+7<\/code> shortcut (can be changed in settings). I find this option very useful, as in many cases I copy the image from the website, a chat etc. and then I can quickly open it and annotate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Most common workflow for me<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Create a screenshot:<code>CMD+SHIFT+4<\/code><\/li><li>Add a rectangle using <code>S<\/code><\/li><li>Add an arrow with <code>A<\/code><\/li><li>Add some text with <code>T<\/code><\/li><li>Blur selected part of the screen with <code>B<\/code><\/li><li>Copy the image to clipboard with <code>CMD+SHIFT+C<\/code><\/li><li>Close the window with <code>CMD+W<\/code><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Note: Using a mouse or trackpad is still required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Drawbacks<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As I stated earlier, there are issues related to using <code>Annotate<\/code> with external services like <code>Facebook<\/code>, <code>Twitter<\/code> or <code>Dropbox<\/code> and it looks like they may not be addressed by the developers as the app is not actively maintained: last update on <code>Sep 20, 2016<\/code>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Summary<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I really enjoy using <code>Annotate<\/code> so far and not working integration with external services is not an issue for me at this moment.
