Ubuntu-MATE which is based on MATE Desktop (a GNOME-2 fork) is also a similar competing distro though its debatable whether its as light as Xubuntu in terms of resource consumption.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3674\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3674\" style=\"width: 820px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.systemcodegeeks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/ubuntu-mate_lookalike-1024x576.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3674\" src=\"http:\/\/www.systemcodegeeks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/ubuntu-mate_lookalike-1024x576.png\" alt=\"xubuntu\" width=\"820\" height=\"461\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.systemcodegeeks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/ubuntu-mate_lookalike-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.systemcodegeeks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/ubuntu-mate_lookalike-1024x576-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/www.systemcodegeeks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/ubuntu-mate_lookalike-1024x576-768x432.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 820px) 100vw, 820px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3674\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Xubuntu Desktop which looks like Ubuntu-MATE<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Making a switch from Xubuntu to Ubuntu-MATE totally makes sense if you have any particular reason for it, but I\u2019ve observed that many people make that switch only because they like the astonishing looks of Ubuntu-MATE which are admittedly and relatively better compared to XFCE. For whatever reason (such as familiarity) if you want to just stay on Xubuntu but still want to have the \u201clook and feel\u201d of Ubuntu-MATE, its very easy to achieve that, you just have to follow this brief process described in this article.<\/p>\n<h2>Step-1: Download the Ambiance theme for XFCE from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xfce-look.org\/p\/1016446\/\">here<\/a> and extract them to your ~\/.themes\/ folder.<\/h2>\n<p>Whilst the official Ubuntu packages <strong>mate-themes<\/strong> and <strong>ubuntu-mate-themes <\/strong>also come with a version of Ambiance theme, the window title background didn\u2019t turn dark when I applied it for some reason. You can still have those packages installed if you want, but the one in your ~\/.themes\/ folder will override any installed themes.<\/p>\n<h2>Step-2: Apply Ambiance GTK theme.<\/h2>\n<p>Head over to Appearance applet in your XFCE Settings Manager and switch the GTK theme to <strong>Ambiance<\/strong> which you should now see after performing step-1:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3675\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3675\" style=\"width: 642px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.systemcodegeeks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/SM_appearance.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3675 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.systemcodegeeks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/SM_appearance.png\" alt=\"xubuntu appearance\" width=\"642\" height=\"530\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.systemcodegeeks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/SM_appearance.png 642w, https:\/\/www.systemcodegeeks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/SM_appearance-300x248.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 642px) 100vw, 642px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3675\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Settings Manager-&gt;Appearance<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Step-3: Apply Ambiance Window Manager theme.<\/h2>\n<p>The next step is to do the same for Window Manager theme. Head over to Window Manager applet and make the switch there too:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3676\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3676\" style=\"width: 642px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.systemcodegeeks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/SM_window_manager.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3676 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.systemcodegeeks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/SM_window_manager.png\" alt=\"xubuntu style\" width=\"642\" height=\"530\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.systemcodegeeks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/SM_window_manager.png 642w, https:\/\/www.systemcodegeeks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/SM_window_manager-300x248.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 642px) 100vw, 642px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3676\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Settings Manager-&gt;Window Manager<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Step-4: Install Ubuntu-MATE icons.<\/h2>\n<p>This is for adding those green MATE icons. Just run this command to install the official package:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"brush:bash\">sudo apt install ubuntu-mate-icon-themes<\/pre>\n<p>Again open the Appearance applet but this time click the <strong>Icons<\/strong> tab on the top, and just select <strong>Ambiance-MATE<\/strong> from there:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3677\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3677\" style=\"width: 642px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.systemcodegeeks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/SM_appearance_icons.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3677 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.systemcodegeeks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/SM_appearance_icons.png\" alt=\"xubuntu icons\" width=\"642\" height=\"530\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.systemcodegeeks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/SM_appearance_icons.png 642w, https:\/\/www.systemcodegeeks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/SM_appearance_icons-300x248.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 642px) 100vw, 642px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3677\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Settings Manager-&gt;Appearance (Icons Tab)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Optionally, you can also click the <strong>Fonts<\/strong> tab and change the font to Ubuntu or one of its derivatives to get that Ubuntu-MATE feel!<\/p>\n<h2>Step-5: Use the magic switch: XFCE Panel Switch.<\/h2>\n<p>The <strong>XFCE Panel Switch<\/strong> is a wonderful tool that drastically alters the layout of your XFCE Desktop, just search for \u201cXFCE Panel Switch\u201d in your whisker menu or find it under <strong>Settings<\/strong> in your regular menu. Start that tool and you\u2019ll be able to switch to any desired desktop layout (choose \u201cGNOME 2\u201d for the looks of Ubuntu-MATE and click \u201cApply\u201d icon which is the first in the bottom list of small icons):<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3678\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3678\" style=\"width: 352px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.systemcodegeeks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/xfce-panel-switch.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3678 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.systemcodegeeks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/xfce-panel-switch.png\" alt=\"xfce xubuntu\" width=\"352\" height=\"430\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.systemcodegeeks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/xfce-panel-switch.png 352w, https:\/\/www.systemcodegeeks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/xfce-panel-switch-246x300.png 246w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 352px) 100vw, 352px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3678\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">XFCE Panel Switch<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Once you do that, you should be able to get a perfect Ubuntu-MATE look alike such as the one shown on the top screen.
