{"id":248,"date":"2016-03-02T17:11:52","date_gmt":"2016-03-02T15:11:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.systemcodegeeks.com\/?p=248"},"modified":"2016-02-25T23:42:27","modified_gmt":"2016-02-25T21:42:27","slug":"executing-cookbooks-chef-solo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.systemcodegeeks.com\/devops\/executing-cookbooks-chef-solo\/","title":{"rendered":"Executing Cookbooks with Chef-Solo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.chef.io\/chef_solo.html\" target=\"_blank\">Chef-Solo<\/a>\u00a0is an open source tool that runs locally and allows us to provision the guest machine using chef cookbooks without the complication of any chef client and server configuration.<\/p>\n<p>In this post, we will learn to execute a simple recipe which will create a file with some content inside\u00a0<strong>\/tmp<\/strong> directory using chef cookbook recipe.<\/p>\n<p>To start with, we will create a directory where all our chef related content resides and for me it\u2019s <strong>chef-repository<\/strong>, as follows:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"brush:bash\">$ mkdir chef-repository<\/pre>\n<p>Next, we will configure <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.chef.io\/knife.html\" target=\"_blank\">Knife<\/a>\u00a0inside our chef-repository to create cookbooks and recipes, as follows:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"brush:bash\">$ cd chef-repository\r\n$ mkdir .chef\r\n$\u00a0echo \"cookbook_path [ '\/vagrant\/chef-repository\/cookbooks' ]\" &gt; .chef\/knife.rb<\/pre>\n<p><strong>\/vagrant\/chef-repository\/cookbooks<\/strong> specified above refers the path to chef cookbooks.<\/p>\n<p>Now, we will create our first cookbook using knife which will also create recipe with name <strong>default.rb<\/strong> for us with default content, as follows:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"brush:bash\">$ knife cookbook create mycookbook<\/pre>\n<p>Edit the content of <strong>cookbooks\/mycookbook\/recipes\/default.rb<\/strong> to create the file with name <strong>default-file<\/strong>\u00a0with given content\u00a0inside\u00a0<strong>\/tmp<\/strong> directory as below:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"brush:bash\">file \"\/tmp\/default-file\" do\r\n  content \"It's file created by Chef Recipe\"\r\n  owner \"root\"\r\n  group \"root\"\r\n  mode 00600\r\nend<\/pre>\n<p>Move to directory <strong>\u2018cookbooks\u2019<\/strong> and create chef configuration file <strong>solo.rb<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"brush:bash\">$\u00a0echo \"cookbook_path ['$PWD']\" &gt; solo.rb<\/pre>\n<p>Next, run the recipe we created using <strong>chef-solo<\/strong>., as follows:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"brush:bash\">$ chef-solo -c solo.rb -o mycookbook::default;<\/pre>\n<h2>Running multiple recipes inside cookbook?<\/h2>\n<p>We can run multiple recipes using chef-solo <strong>\u2013override-runlist<\/strong> and <strong>\u2013json-attributes<\/strong> command line options as follows:<\/p>\n<h4>a.
