Suppose that we want to start a tomcat application on startup First we shall install tomcat<\/p>\n<pre class=\"brush:bash\">mkdir \/opt\/tomcat\r\ngroupadd tomcat\r\nuseradd -s \/bin\/false -g tomcat -d \/opt\/tomcat tomcat\r\nwget http:\/\/apache.cc.uoc.gr\/tomcat\/tomcat-8\/v8.0.33\/bin\/apache-tomcat-8.0.33.tar.gz\r\ntar xvf apache-tomcat-8.0.33.tar.gz\r\nmv apache-tomcat-8.0.33\/* \/opt\/tomcat\r\nrm -r apache-tomcat-8.0.33 apache-tomcat-8.0.33.tar.gz \r\ncd \/opt\/tomcat\r\nchgrp -R tomcat conf\r\nchmod g+rwx conf\r\nchmod g+r conf\/*\r\nchown -R tomcat work\/ temp\/ logs\/<\/pre>\n<p>In case of Systemd we should add a tomcat.service file on \/etc\/systemd\/system.\u00a0The file \/etc\/systemd\/system\/tomcat.service shall contain<\/p>\n<pre class=\"brush:bash\">[Unit]\r\nDescription=Apache Tomcat Web Application Container\r\nAfter=syslog.target network.target\r\n \r\n[Service]\r\nType=forking\r\n \r\nEnvironment=JAVA_HOME=\/usr\/java\/default\r\nEnvironment=CATALINA_PID=\/opt\/tomcat\/temp\/tomcat.pid\r\nEnvironment=CATALINA_HOME=\/opt\/tomcat\r\nEnvironment=CATALINA_BASE=\/opt\/tomcat\r\nEnvironment='CATALINA_OPTS=-Xms512M -Xmx1024M -server -XX:+UseParallelGC'\r\nEnvironment='JAVA_OPTS=-Duser.timezone=UTC -Djava.awt.headless=true -Djava.security.egd=file:\/dev\/.\/urandom'\r\n \r\nExecStart=\/opt\/tomcat\/bin\/startup.sh\r\nExecStop=\/bin\/kill -15 $MAINPID\r\n \r\nUser=tomcat\r\nGroup=tomcat\r\n \r\n[Install]\r\nWantedBy=multi-user.target<\/pre>\n<p>I specified the script to start after syslog and network are enabled.\u00a0As we can see systemd handles the tomcat as a daemon and kills the pid.\u00a0With User and Group we specify the user and the group that the process should be run as.\u00a0Systemd will handle the upstart process and kill it using the PID. To enable and run you have to issue<\/p>\n<pre class=\"brush:bash\">systemctl enable tomcat\r\nsystemctl start tomcat<\/pre>\n<p>In case of upstart we should create a tomcat.conf file in \/etc\/init\/.\u00a0The content of \/etc\/init\/tomcat.conf<\/p>\n<pre class=\"brush:bash\">description     \"Tomcat instance\"\r\nauthor          \"Emmanouil Gkatziouras\"\r\n \r\nrespawn\r\nrespawn limit 2 5\r\n \r\nstart on runlevel [2345]\r\nstop on runlevel [!2345]\r\n \r\nsetuid tomcat\r\nsetgid tomcat\r\n \r\nenv CATALINA_HOME=\/opt\/tomcat\r\n \r\nscript\r\n        $CATALINA_HOME\/bin\/catalina.sh run\r\nend script\r\n \r\npost-stop script\r\n        rm -rf $CATALINA_HOME\/temp\/*\r\nend script<\/pre>\n<p>It will start on run levels 2,3,4 or 5. The group and the user id to be executed would be tomcat.
