This programme focuses on bioactive molecules, in particular their preparation by synthetic Chemistry and biotechnological methods, their role in biological systems and their application as drugs. To this end, the programme combines knowledge from Chemistry and related fields, in particular the Biosciences, thus providing an interdisciplinary perspectives.

The Master's programme in Natural Product and Drug Chemistry is ideal for Chemistry graduates who wish to advance their skills in the synthesis of complex organic compounds and deepen their knowledge of bioactive molecules. The programme is also directed towards graduates of related subjects, such as Biochemistry, who are motivated to gain more specific training in the field of bioactive small molecules and to develop a strong interdisciplinary profile through the acquisition of chemical skills.

Applicants should have a good understanding of the mechanisms of Organic Chemistry and Molecular Biochemistry as well as a minimum of experience in experimental laboratory work, since courses in synthetic Organic Chemistry, chemical analysis and natural product biosynthesis form the core of the curriculum.

A topic of high societal relevance

What do a deep-sea sponge, a yew tree and a soil bacterium have in common? They all produce natural products that humans use as active ingredients! Such bioactive compounds from nature have always been used by mankind for the treatment of diseases and still serve as eminently important molecular leads in modern medicine. Beside their medical use, natural products affect out daily lives in many other ways. They are widely used in sectors such as the food and fragrance industries and agriculture, where they help to develop sustainable solutions.
