Below is STAT’s policy on the use of artificial intelligence. You can also read STAT’s ethics policy here.

All of STAT’s editorial work, including written stories, videos, podcasts, data visualizations, photographs, social media posts, and illustrations, are created and reviewed by reporters and editors.

While STAT does not use AI to write stories or create multimedia content, it does allow the technology in limited roles in the editorial process. Examples of such uses include the use of transcription software, search tools, and code suggestion and completion tools.

If AI is ever used in ways that go beyond the kind of routine purposes described above, STAT will disclose such instances, explain both the scope and justification of its use, affix labels to relevant associated media, and, when possible, publish accompanying code and datasets.

Contributing writers, including opinion writers, have agreed to disclose their use of AI in any way to an editor and abide by these principles.
