Here&#8217;s the syntax of the <code>DROP ROLE<\/code> statement:<\/p>\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\" aria-describedby=\"shcb-language-1\" data-shcb-language-name=\"SQL (Structured Query Language)\" data-shcb-language-slug=\"sql\"><span><code class=\"hljs language-sql\"><span class=\"hljs-keyword\">DROP<\/span> <span class=\"hljs-keyword\">ROLE<\/span> &#91;<span class=\"hljs-keyword\">IF<\/span> <span class=\"hljs-keyword\">EXISTS<\/span>] role_name;<\/code><\/span><small class=\"shcb-language\" id=\"shcb-language-1\"><span class=\"shcb-language__label\">Code language:<\/span> <span class=\"shcb-language__name\">SQL (Structured Query Language)<\/span> <span class=\"shcb-language__paren\">(<\/span><span class=\"shcb-language__slug\">sql<\/span><span class=\"shcb-language__paren\">)<\/span><\/small><\/pre>\n\n\n<p>In this syntax, you specify the name of the role that you want to remove after the <code>DROP ROLE<\/code> keywords.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <code>IF EXISTS<\/code> clause is optional and has been available since SQL Server 2016. The <code>IF EXISTS<\/code> conditionally removes the role only if it already exists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <code>DROP ROLE<\/code> statement cannot remove a role that owns securables.  To drop a role that owns the securables, you need to first transfer ownership of those securables and then drop the role from the database.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <code>DROP ROLE<\/code> statement cannot remove a role that has members. To remove a role that has members, you need to remove the members from the role before dropping it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <code>DROP ROLE<\/code> statement cannot remove fixed database roles like <code>db_datareader<\/code>, <code>db_datawriter<\/code>, <code>db_securityadmin<\/code>, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id='sql-server-drop-role-statement-example'>SQL Server DROP ROLE statement example <a href=\"#sql-server-drop-role-statement-example\" class=\"anchor\" id=\"sql-server-drop-role-statement-example\" title=\"Anchor for SQL Server DROP ROLE statement example\">#<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The following example uses the <code>BikeStores<\/code> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sqlservertutorial.net\/sql-server-sample-database\/\">sample database<\/a>.
