BACKGROUND
The cost challenge of game development
Whimsy Games is a group of specialists who are passionate about game development. They do reliable and secure game development, unique and eye-catching 2D and 3D art, and align with the latest market trends.
As with many game development companies, software tools are essential to the process –from design and animation platforms to collaboration and project management solutions. Naturally, this makes software expenses one of the company’s largest cost items.
“Our initial interest was to try reduce costs for collaboration tools as well as tools for software development.” – Anton Kotelevsky, Head of IT.
WORKING WITH SPENDBASE
Delivering 60% in total savings
One of the largest software related expenses was GitLab, which became our initial focus. To make things worse, GitLab introduced a substantial 50% price hike for Whimsy Games upon the upcoming renewal.
“At Spenndbase, we make sure to go the extra mile. Therefore, beyond GitLab discount, we set out to help our customer optimize their cloud spending. To do this, we consolidated several of their accounts, billing, and overall cloud usage.
RESULTS
All-in-one: from SaaS to cloud savings
The highlight of our cost optimization campaign was Gitlab. We prevented a planned price increase and secured an additional discount on the existing rate. However, we went far beyond that, unlocking additional savings opportunities across other tools.
Using the Spendbase platform, we identified additional software subscriptions where costs could be optimized. This resulted in:
– 60% savings – by preventing a planned price increase and securing an additional vendor discount;
– 25% savings on Google Workspace, Atlassian, and Slack through improved licensing and partner pricing;
– 8% partner discount on AWS, thus reducing overall cloud infrastructure costs.
