Space Weather Update / Weak CME Passage
August 11, 2026 @ 19:10 UTC (UPDATED)
Below is an updated look at three sunspot regions currently located in the northeast quadrant. AR 4507 and 4508 were both assigned today and 4507 was the source of a minor C1.8 flare at 18:07 UTC (Aug 11). The region (4507) appears to be slowly developing and will be monitored. All other regions have been mostly stable. Image by SDO/HMI.

Geomagnetic activity continues at unsettled levels (Kp3) following a weak CME passage at 11:33 UTC. At the time of this update, a minor (G1) geomagnetic storm watch remains in effect.

UPDATE: The minor (G1) storm watch has been cancelled as NOAA/SWPC indicate that storm conditions are no longer expected.

A pair of filament eruptions on August 8th, one in the northeast quadrant and one towards the southwest limb did result in coronal mass ejections. The first event, a well defined filament that I first commented on a few days ago, erupted and was responsible for a faint, possibly Earth directed CME. The second event was a larger eruption near the southwest limb the produced a fairly energetic CME that is directed mostly away from Earth with a glancing blow possible by August 12th. A combined impact could be enough to generate minor (G1) storming at higher latitudes. More updates in the days ahead.
