Fandom Draws the Line: Fanworks, AI, and Resistance by Dawn Felagund, Grundy

By definition, fanworks fandom does not draw a lot of boundaries, but community archives and events have taken a strong stance against AI-generated fanworks due to ethical considerations and member input.

Grief, Grieving, and Permission to Mourn in the "Quenta Silmarillion" by Dawn Walls-Thumma

In a book as full of death as the Quenta Silmarillion, grief and mourning are surprisingly absent. The characters who receive grief and mourning—and those who don't—appear to do so due to narrative bias. Grief and mourning (or a lack of them) serve to draw attention toward and away from objectionable actions committed by characters.

Tolkien, Lunatic Physicists, and Abnegation by Cynthia (Cindy) Gates

This presentation for Mereth Aderthad 2025 discusses the parallels between the concept of abnegation in the scientific work surrounding the atomic bomb and in The Silmarillion. The relinquishment of self-interest in favor of the interests of others, abnegation was identified by Tolkien as a powerful act of spirit and reason. The legendarium has many examples of the complexities of abnegation, which parallel similar discussions held by physicists during and after World War II.

Tolkien's "Collected Poems": A Link Collection by Himring

| | |

Fanwork Notes

This is a collection that I started compiling as preliminary research for a piece that I hope to write later, but that might perhaps have a bit of independent value to someone, so I decided to offer it up for Tolkien Meta Week.

I may add to it, so it is not marked complete.

I hope the link descriptions will serve the purpose for now; they were done in haste and may be expanded a bit later.

This is quite the list of…

This is quite the list of reviews. I looked at Wayne and Christina's informative and interesting "making of" post. For the reviews, with so many things to read, I'm happy to just wait for your review (whenever it comes, it'll be precisely on time!)

I also peeke at the errata and, as an impatient perfectionist who's been in desktop publishing and made more than my fair share of print errors, my first reaction to the long list was visceral! But the collected poems is a startlingly massive tome (and the source material so often difficult to decipher) so that is actually a relatively short list! I probably shouldn't be surprised that he wrote so many poems, considering the volumes of his other work, but by the same token, how on earth did he find the time, between work, family, and recurrent illnesses!? (Then again, looking at my own disregarded heaps of unshared writing and drawings that my timewasteful perfectionism deems notgoodenough, and knowing he was apparently similarly afflicted, I guess I know the answer.)

Thank you for checking this…

Thank you for checking this collection out! I'm glad you found things of interest to you.

Wayne and Christina's reputation for accuracy is very high indeed. I think it is a testimony to that thoroughness and also to their scrupulous honesty that they found and posted that list of errata and addenda so quickly, even though at first sight the length of the list might suggest the opposite. It was a really tricky editing job.

I find fascinating not only that there are so many, but how some of the poems grow and transform alongside and within the Legendarium!
