Intro to College Studies


Intrinsic and Extrinsic Factors

 Intrinsic factors include learning disabilities, emotional issues, and lack of motivation
 Extrinsic factors include lack of resources, socioeconomic factors, or inadequate
learning environment
Intrinsic Factors

 Emotional barriers: fear of failure, low self-confidence, resistance to change


 Cognitive/Personal barriers: dyslexia, ADHD, mental health challenges such as anxiety
or depression
 Motivational barriers: lack of goals, lack of focus, or not understanding the importance
or value of the learning experience
 Previous knowledge: creating barriers to grasping new knowledge based on previously
learned skills (such as CNAs, CMAs, EMTs, and Paramedics)
Dyslexia

 Students with dyslexia may struggle with large amounts of complex reading, writing,
note-taking, and time management
 Speak with Student Services for accommodations such as extended time for tests
 Use audiobooks and podcasts, ask for printed materials, tutoring, and develop good
study strategies
ADHD

 Students with ADHD struggle with time management, organization, attention span,
social challenges, and emotional challenges
 Speak with Student Services for accommodations like extended time for exams
 Use earplugs to block out distracting noise
 Establish routines – Use a planner or calendar
 Take medications as prescribed
 Learn effective study strategies such as breaking tasks into smaller steps, using
timers, and taking breaks
Test Anxiety

 A form of performance anxiety that causes intense feelings of dread and apprehension
before and during an exam, causing poor test scores
 Causes of test anxiety include: fear of failure, lack of preparation, high pressure, past
negative experiences, and perfectionism
 Be sure to study effectively, prioritize self-care, create a routine, talk to your instructor
regarding test format and content, and practice relaxation
 During the exam use deep breathing, combat negative thoughts, budget your time,
and focus on what you know
Depression

 Affects college students at a higher rate than the general population; higher in female
students and students from minority groups
 Caused by academic stress and pressure and social isolation
 Maintain routines, get regular exercise, eat a healthy diet, and get adequate rest.
 Stay connected with friends and family
 Excessive alcohol or drug use can worsen depression
Prior Knowledge

 Nursing exams and licensure exams require a different type of thinking and skill than
what is learned in other fields
 Focusing on practical skills without studying nursing concepts can be detrimental
Extrinsic Factors

 Includes socioeconomic status, poor learning environments, lack of resources, and


inadequate family support
 Low income can limit access to additional supplementary learning resources
 Physical and environmental factors can include no private space to study (noisiness),
the area can be poorly lit, or even uncomfortable
 Family problems, lack of involvement, and cultural differences can create significant
challenges for learners
English as a Second Language

 May have increased difficulty with pronunciation and spelling, and increased difficulty
grasping difficult concepts
 May struggle to keep up with fast-paced lectures due to listening comprehension
 May have difficulty with reading abilities
 Can cause anxiety, a lack of confidence, and social isolation
Childcare and Family Support

 Utilize state and federal child care assistance programs


 Have open communication with your support systems about your needs
 Accept help with childcare and household chores
 Plan out studying ahead of time with your support system
 Build a peer support network
 Ensure to engage in self-care to prevent burnout
Resources for Lack of Internet and
Personal Vehicles

 Lack of internet at home


 Utilize public libraries and community centers (even coffee shops)
 FCC Lifeline Program provides a monthly discount on phone or internet service for eligible low-
income households
 Lack of a personal vehicle
 Walking, biking, or using electric scooters if close enough to campus
 Public transit
 Rideshare services like Uber and Lyft
 Carpooling with other students
 Plan your schedule with your support group so that they can give you rides
