VLAN
What is VLAN in Networking?
A Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN) is a logical subnetwork that groups a collection
of devices from different physical LANs. VLANs are used to improve network performance,
security, and management by segmenting a larger network into smaller, more
manageable sections.
Key Principles of VLANs
Broadcast Domain Segmentation: VLANs break a large broadcast domain into smaller
broadcast domains. Each VLAN creates a separate broadcast domain, meaning that
broadcast messages sent within a VLAN do not reach devices outside that VLAN.
Logical Grouping: VLANs allow network administrators to group devices logically rather
than physically. This means devices can be grouped based on function, department, or
application, regardless of their physical location.
VLAN Tagging: VLAN tagging is a method to identify and distinguish VLAN traffic from
other network traffic. This is typically done by adding a VLAN tag to the Ethernet frame
header.
Benefits of VLANs
Improved Network Security: VLANs can separate network traffic and limit
access to specific network resources, enhancing security by preventing
unauthorized access.
Better Network Performance: By reducing the amount of broadcast traffic,
VLANs can improve network performance.
Simplified Network Management: VLANs allow for easier network
management by grouping devices logically, simplifying tasks such as
configuration, troubleshooting, and maintenance.
Flexibility and Scalability: VLANs can be configured dynamically, allowing
for quick adjustments to network configurations. They also help in scaling the
network by segmenting it into smaller, manageable groups
Real-Time Applications
VLANs are widely used in various applications, including:
Voice over IP (VoIP): Isolating voice traffic from data traffic to improve call
quality.
Video Conferencing: Prioritizing video traffic to ensure high-quality
conferencing.
Remote Access: Providing secure remote access to cloud-based applications.
Gaming: Prioritizing gaming traffic for a smooth experience.
IoT: Isolating IoT devices to improve security and reduce congestion
