What is Graphic Design?
• When planning for graphic design, the goal is to make a material look good and
appealing.
• To do this you need to understand the art, the element and the principles of Design
• Art – Refers to the product of a designer’s creativity
• Element – Refers to the different components of a design, like the lines, shapes, colors,
texture, size, value and space.
What is Graphic Design?
• Principles of Design – are all about the rules, standards and guides, they give
designers a direction on their design
• The principles cover balancing a design and using contrast, repetition, harmony, variety and
more.
• Graphic design is not just about looks but it is also about the imparted
messages and information.
• It is also to make sure that you are communicating your message or information
correctly.
Tools in Graphic Design
• The Hardware
• Lets talk about the hardware first, not all computers are built for graphic design,
netbooks for example are for surfing the internet.
• Some desktops are only good for office work and data encoding or word processing.
• In graphic design the higher the specifications of the hardware the more functional it is.
The Hardware
• Look for a computer with a good processor, there are two leading
manufacturers, Intel and AMD.
• Intel offers i3, i5 and i7 processors which are on the 10th generation.
• The equivalent of AMD are the FX and Phenom series.
• Your installed system memory or RAM (Random Access Memory) is an important factor
most computers come with 4GB minimum and 8 GB recommended, the higher the ram
the better the performance.
The Hardware
• Another consideration is your graphics card.
• This is different from RAM which uses non-graphics related gaming operations.
• Note that the more RAM your card has , the more computations it will be able to make
and the better graphics you can get.
• And NVIDIA is the most popular manufacturer of graphics cards.
The Hardware
• Most Desktops and Laptops come with a 500 GB and 1 TB hard drive, 1TB hard
drives are more recommended than 500GB as files now need more space.
• In graphic design the file sizes are at least ten times bigger than ordinary files. The
bigger the capacity of your hard drive the more graphic design you can store and work
on.
• Another important part of our hardware is our monitor. Graphic designers should have
a good, or the best monitors as this is where they look at our designed.
The Hardware
• The last piece of hardware that is good to have is the UPS (Uninterrupted Power
Supply).
• This piece of hardware gives you time to save your work and shut down your computer
properly in case of power interruption.
