Life in Accra Before COVID-19
• busy streets with lots of traffic and trotters
that are honking
• Children playing football in Community 25's
unpaved streets while their neighbors shout,
laugh, and play loud music at night
• A metropolis bustling with activity, noise, and
daily life
First Signs of the Virus
• News stories from Europe and China seemed
far away. Radio discussions: Some were
afraid, while others claimed it would never
make it to Ghana.
• Everyone was stunned by Ghana's first
confirmed cases.
• Immediate restrictions: churches halted
meetings and schools shuttered
School Disruptions
• Students were first thrilled about the brief
break from class.
• Online education started, but it felt disjointed
and annoying.
• Unfair access: a lot of pals didn't have
computers or reliable internet.
• Loss of the typical classroom activities, such as
group projects, raising hands, chalkboards, and
enjoyable breaks
Life at Home During Lockdown
• Daily tasks include cooking, sweeping, and
yard cleanup.
• Strict safety regulations: Veronica buckets
everywhere, frequent hand washing
• Every room has sanitizers, masks are
becoming commonplace, and family time is
fostering tensions due to prolonged indoor
use.
Moments of Joy
• With siblings, playing indoor football and
board games
• Family dinners seemed more significant.
• We were able to forget our anxieties through
stories and laughs.
• Faith and music provided solace and
fortitude.
Lessons Learned
• Nothing in life is permanent; things can
change abruptly.
• In difficult times, community support is
essential.
• Everyone should have flexible access to
education.
