Part one; introduction
Background history of hosting company
Engineering Corporation of Oromia (ECO) was re-established in 2020 with
Regulation No.214/2020 of the Oromia National, Regional State by changing from
former name OWWDSE to ECO
which was founded in Addis Ababa in May 2006 with Regulation No. 66/2006 with
the objective to deliver high quality services to its customer
The former Oromia Water Works Design and Supervision Enterprise (OWWDSE)
was established with authorized capital of 100 million ET birr where the paid-up
Capital in cash and in kind was 15 million ET birr, with 3 vehicles and 32
employees
Currently ECO has 1222 Employees, 192 Vehicles, and current Capital is 802.33
million ETB whereas the authorized capital is 1Bln ET birr.
Vision Statement
Being one of the most innovative and reliable engineering services providers in East
Africa by 2030.
Mission Statement
To augment the economic development of the Oromia region by filling market gaps
Stabilizing engineering service market prices; promoting excellence in engineering and
construction management consultancy service
To deliver least-cost and high-quality engineering study
Designs and construction management services to its clients.
Background of the project
Owner: - Siinqee Bank Share Company Consultant: Engineering
Corporation of Oromia.
Plot of the project: - 954.05m2
Location: - Addis Ababa on the way from Bole to Dembel around Bole
Matemia..
SIINQEE BANK office construction was a huge project with 3B+G+15 office and mixed
use building. It is a three year project with a total cost of 1,696,424,322.62 et.birr
including VAT. When it is finished it will start giving a service as, Bank, Offices and it
includes meeting hall.
Objective of the project
As the siinqee bank is new and rapidly growing company it is on the way expanding office
to satisfy target customers and widen its work area.
Part Two ; Materials and Methodology
Materials
The building material should have high load bearing
capacity, pleasing and good serviceability, and also it should
be economical.
• During my internship program we used lots of different construction
materials and equipment on site, those are: -
High-quality materials such as Ordinary Portland Cement
(OPC), fine and coarse aggregates, steel reinforcement
bars, and admixtures ,were used to ensure the durability
and strength of the structure.
The project utilized advanced machinery such as:
• Concrete pump trucks for efficient material handling
• Fixed cranes for lifting heavy materials
• Vibrators for concrete compaction and removing air
bubbles.
Form work is a temporary structure which is constructed prior to carry fresh
concrete.
Functions of form work
To support the reinforced concrete structure so it gives its strength.
To give the shape required for the concrete, for this purpose there are rectangular and
circular panels for casting concrete.
Formwork used for all structural part of building like column, beam, slab, stair, and
shear wall
In our site mainly used wooden formwork those are ply-wood,
When the concrete reached a certain required strength the formwork is no longer
needed and is removed.
Form work Removal (dismantling) period
For horizontal (suspended) structures like slab, stair and beam we removed after 21
days
For vertical structures like column, footing , grade beam we removed after 24 hours.
Column
Columns and beams serve as the key structural elements.
on my site used to rectangular column only .
Column reinforcements were installed with precision using 24mm
diameter bars for longitudinal support and 10mm bars for stirrups.
Beams
Beams were divided into primary and
secondary types, with precise placement to
support the slab structure
Shear Walls
In my site shear walls were reinforced with steel
bars and constructed around the elevator shafts
and staircases for added strength.
SLAB
The slab is made of two components of reinforcement bar.
A solid slab consumes more concrete and reinforcement
than other type of slabs. The exercised (executed) slab on
my main site SIINQEE BANK construction had a thickness
of 15cm. It contain top and bottom re-bar reinforcement.
STAIRE
The staircase, a vital component of the building,
follows a dog-legged design.
Main bars (12mm) and distribution bars (14mm)
were used to ensure strength, while proper
concrete curing prevented structural weaknesses.
Part three
Benefits and challenges I faced on internship
BENEFITS
Throughout the internship, I improved practical
skills like site supervision, problem-solving
during construction phases, and applying
engineering principles to real-world challenges.
This experience greatly enhanced my
understanding of structural engineering.
CHALLENGES
Challenges included communication barriers
with site workers, unfamiliarity with site
language, and occasional concrete
segregation.
Solutions involved active interaction with the
team and learning from supervisors
PART FOUR
Conclusion and Recommendations
Conclusion and Recommendations This
internship provided invaluable hands-on
experience in civil engineering, especially in
the high-rise building sector.
Recommendations:
For ECO: Implement better material
management to avoid delays.
For Arba Minch University: Extend internship
duration to allow more in-depth exposure.
Thank you
