INTRODUCTION
INTRODUCTION
What is vEPC (Virtual Evolved Packet Core)?
A Virtual Evolved Packet Core (vEPC) is a framework for mobile networks' voice
and data processing and switching that is implemented by Network Functions
Virtualization (NFV), which virtualizes the functions of an Evolved Packet Core
(EPC).

Why you need vEPC ?
By virtualizing Evolved Packet Core (EPC) functionality, mobile providers can
theoretically customize networks to meet the unique requirements of individual
customers, mixing and matching individual network components as needed.

INTRODUCTION
INTRODUCTION
The Virtual Evolved Packet Core (vEPC) is a fundamental component of network
virtualization in 4G LTE and 5G networks.
Virtual Evolved Packet Core (vEPC) is functionally similar to the physical EPC.
However, the way in which the EPC is deployed and managed is different from
physical EPC.
By virtualizing the core network functions, network operators can achieve greater
flexibility, scalability, and resource efficiency, enabling them to meet the diverse
demands of modern cellular networks and services

INTRODUCTION
INTRODUCTION
Implementing an EPC required expensive proprietary hardware & software
infrastructure. Network Functions Virtualization moves the functions of the EPC
to the software domain and allows it to be run on low-cost Commercial Off-The-
Shelf (COTS) servers.

vEPC
The vEPC consists of several virtualized network functions (VNFs) that together
replicate the functionalities of the traditional physical Evolved Packet Core.
Virtualized Mobility Management Entity (vMME)
Virtualized Serving Gateway (vSGW)
Virtualized Packet Data Network Gateway (vPGW)
Virtualized Policy and Charging Rules Function (vPCRF)

Virtualized Mobility Management Entity (vMME):
The vMME is responsible for mobility management functions, such as tracking user
movements between base stations, handover management, and session
management.

Virtualized Serving Gateway (vSGW):
The vSGW acts as the gateway between the radio access network (e.g., LTE or 5G
base stations) and the core network. It handles tasks like packet routing, IP
address assignment, and data forwarding.

Virtualized Packet Data Network Gateway (vPGW):
The vPGW serves as the interface between the core network and external packet
data networks, such as the internet. It is responsible for data packet routing,
packet filtering, and network address translation (NAT).

Virtualized Policy and Charging Rules Function (vPCRF):
The vPCRF manages policy and charging rules, enforcing quality of service (QoS)
policies, and handling charging and billing functions for data services.
