Introduction To Coding Workshop by Slidesgo

The document provides an overview of routers, which are networking devices that forward data packets between computer networks by examining destination IP addresses. It explains how routers work, including the process of receiving, checking, and forwarding data packets, and outlines different types of routers such as wired, wireless, core, edge, and virtual routers. Key features of routers include packet forwarding to ensure efficient communication across networks.

What are routers ?
What are Routers ?
• A router is a networking device that forwards data
packets between different computer networks.

• It examines the destination IP address of each

packet and determines the best path for it to reach
its destination.

• Routers connect local networks (like home Wi-Fi) to

larger networks (like the internet), ensuring
efficient and secure communication.

How do routers
work ?
Working of Routers
•Data is sent from a device – When your PC, phone, or laptop requests something
(like opening a website), it creates a data packet.
•Router receives the packet – The packet first reaches your router (through Wi-Fi
or Ethernet).
•Router checks the destination IP address – The router looks inside the packet
to see where it needs to go.
•Router consults its routing table – This is like a map of networks that helps the
router decide the best path for that packet.
•Packet is forwarded – The router sends the packet to the next router or directly to
the destination if it’s within the same network.
•Process repeats until delivery – The packet hops across multiple routers until it
reaches the destination server (e.g., Google). The server’s reply comes back through
the same process.

Types Of Routers
Types of Routers
Wired Router
• Connects devices using Ethernet cables.
• Mostly used in older setups or enterprise
LANs.

Wireless Router (Wi-Fi Router)

• Provides both wired and wireless (Wi-Fi)
connectivity.
• Common in homes, offices, and small
businesses.
Types of Routers
• Core Router
• Operates within the backbone of large
networks.
• Handles massive data traffic for ISPs and large
organizations.

• Edge Router
• Sits at the boundary of a network.
• Connects internal networks to external
networks/Internet.
Types of Routers

Virtual Router
• Software-based router running on
servers/cloud.
• Common in data centers and virtualized
environments.
