Introduction
Definition of civil engineer
and green buildings
A civil engineer is a
professional who plans,
designs, and oversees the
construction, operation, and
maintenance of the
structural and environmental
works that serve society —
dams, bridges, canals,
highways, power plants,
water-supply and sewer
systems, coastal defenses,
and other infrastructure vital
to public welfare.
Green Building (sustainable
building):
A structure that is planned,
designed, built, and operated to
minimize its environmental
impact while maximizing
occupant health and comfort.
Problems with the construcción
area
We are living in a period of climate
change, mass biodiversity loss, pollution,
overutilization of natural resources, and a
global waste crisis.
Worldwide, buildings are responsible for
around
40% of energy and process-related CO2 emissi
ons, 50% of all extracted materials, 33% of wat
er consumption and 35% of generated waste
. Other environmental impacts include resource
depletion; air, water, and land pollution, and
biodiversity loss.
By 2050, the global population
will increase 27% to 9.8 billion, and
by 2060 global building floor area is expected t
o double
, catapulting all of the environmental, social,
and economic impacts associated with the built
environment.
Costs related to
green buildings
Traditional buildings cost more to run
because their water and energy systems
are inefficient.
Green buildings use efficient equipment
and durable materials, so utility and
upkeep costs drop over the building’s
life.
Even if upfront costs are higher, the
lifecycle savings make up the difference
and free up money for people,
businesses, and the wider economy.
Water Usage
Conventional buildings,
especially older ones, wastewater
heavily.
Green buildings use water-
efficient plumbing.
These measures reduce the use
water resources and minimize
environmental impact.
Energy Usage
High Energy Usage
Older structures are energy-inefficient
and often rely on non-renewable
energy (coal, oil).
Green buildings utilize renewables
(solar, wind, water) and low-energy
systems (e.g., LED lighting).
Benefits include lower energy bills,
reduced environmental harm, and safer
living conditions due to the absence of
harmful emissions from fossil fuels.
Green Construction
Materials for Eco-Friendly
Building Projects
Top 10 eco-materials
Bamboo – fast-growing, low-energy; flooring, walls,
furniture.
Recycled steel – endlessly recyclable; frames, roofs, rebar.
Reclaimed wood – repurposed lumber; floors, beams,
décor.
Hempcrete – hemp + lime blocks; lightweight, carbon-
absorbing insulation.
Cork – harvested without felling trees; floors,
acoustic/thermal panels.
Solar panels & smart glass – on-site renewables and heat-
modulating facades.
Fly-ash concrete – uses coal by-product; lowers cement
emissions.
Insulated concrete forms (ICFs) – foam-sandwiched
concrete; high thermal performance.
Green roofs & living walls – vegetated skins that insulate
and foster biodiversity.
Curiosity
Daisugi is a technique of
bonsai. Produces special
straight lumber that allows
wood to be harvested without
fully felling trees.
Conclusion
Restate the thesis statement ( repeat in other words)
Summarize key points----suplay chain
Compare and contrast your solutions and say which one out of the 3
solutions is the best and why?
