Structure of Diamond Structure of Graphite
Each carbon atom is joined to four other Each carbon atom forms three covalent
carbon atoms by strong covalent bonds bonds with other carbon atoms
The carbon atoms form a regular tetrahedral The carbon atoms form layers of hexagonal
structure rings
There are no free electron There are no covalent bonds between the
layers
there is one non-bonded - or delocalised -
electron from each atom

Individual task: Self Marking: 3 Marks:
Answer the following questions
1.What is the primary structural difference between diamond and graphite?
A. Diamond consists of carbon atoms in a three-dimensional network, while graphite consists of layers of
carbon atoms.
B. Diamond consists of layers of carbon atoms, while graphite consists of a three-dimensional network of
carbon atoms.
C. Both diamond and graphite consist of layers of carbon atoms.
D. Both diamond and graphite consist of a three-dimensional network of carbon atoms.
2. Which of the following is a property of graphite but not of diamond?
A. High hardness B. Electrical conductivity C. Transparency D. Brittle nature
3. In diamond, each carbon atom is bonded to how many other carbon atoms?
A. 2 B. 3 C.4 D. 6
Critical thinking question: What do you think, how would the properties of diamond and graphite change if their
structures were switched?

Students will work in pairs will read the handout and
complete the task.
Task 1: (a). Describe types of covalent structures.
(b). Identify different physical properties of diamond and
graphite.
Task 2: (a). Why is diamond used in cutting tools?
(b). Why is graphite used as a lubricant?
(c). Explain why diamond is a non-conductor of electricity but
graphite is conductor.
Task 3: Like diamond, silica has a very high melting point, and it does not
conduct electricity,

Macromolecules, allotrope,
giant covalent bond
Task 1: (a). Simple covalent and giant covalent structure.
(b). They both have high melting point. Graphite is soft while diamond is hard.
Graphite is good conductor while diamond is a bad conductor.
Task 2: (a). The carbon atoms in diamond are held together by strong covalent bonds, which
make it very hard. This makes it useful for cutting tools.
(b). The forces between the layers in graphite are weak. This means that the layers
can slide over each other. This makes graphite slippery, so it is useful as a
lubricant.
(c. Diamond does not conduct electricity because it has no charged particles that are
free to move. Graphite does conduct electricity because it has delocalised
electrons which move between the layers.
